What to wear during sanfermines
Tue, 01/18/2005 - 13:24
First DON’T take anything that you don’t want stained, torn, or that you might not want to put back into your suit case. I have a lot of shoes that are left in the flats after the fiesta as people do not want there anywhere near their other clothes. WE often get a whole new wardrobe from clothes that are left as well.
Pamplona is dirty and smelling during san fermin. The streets are washed everyday and that water from the streets always ends up on your pants and never comes out.(not to mention the red wine)
Buy inexpensive clothes if you are bringing your own. They sell drawstring pants in the streets and most people wear white T-shirts you can also obtain these as well as the scarves and shahes. If you are a Large person Xtra tall or Extra around you may want to bring you own as the spanish are on the small side and finding sizes to fit may be a problem.
Traditional wear is white pants or pants/skirts for the ladies, white shirt red shash red scarf. As more and more people come to the fiesta, it seems the less people are willing to wear what is traditional. This does not please the people of pamplona. They are trying to hold on to the tradition of the fiesta, so as I tell people this is their city their fiesta and we are their guests, the least we can do is to try and honor their tradition.
I get a lot of men that say they wouldn’t be caught dead in white pants. Well it isn’t after labor day yet and everyone else is wearing them. Join the people of pamplona and share their joy.
Now I will get off my soap box!
The other thing that is a must is good sturdy shoes. NO sandals as there is broken glass everywhere. If you want to be an idiot and run the risk of slicing your foot open be my guest. White tennis shoes fit the bill, again don’t pay $200 for a pair of running shoes, if you run, you are only running about 10-30 seconds, and as I said a lot of people abandon their shoes as they are often very nasty.
A lite jacket or sweatshirt is a plus as it can often get pretty cool during the wee hours of the morning. A long shleve white shirt works well too it will shade you from the sun and keep you warmer at night.
It can rain during the fiesta and often does. The early morning can be pretty cool as one morning on my way to the run I could see my breath as it was so cold. The days can get rather hot but the nights usually cool down.

White pants, white shirt, red sash & red bandana are a must. Get into the spirit of things. I ran back in 2001 (mid Estafata into the bull ring); what a rush! I was the only one in my group of 6 who dressed the part. My friends razzed me a bit, but I met so many locals who were lovin the fact that I respected their tradition & took the time to get the proper attire.
EXACTLY! thank you ESPO
How much should I expect to pay for the red belt and sashes and the clothing there. I will probably bring some of my own since I am a larger dude. 6 foot 225 lbs so I like the larger clothing.
I cant wait. it will be awesome.
I brought my own gear (white jeans, white shirt & red bandana). I picked all that up at a local clothing chain (Bob’s Stores). One of my firends hand made my sash, which is probably pretty easy. She’d kill me if she read that
I ,too, am on the bigger side 6’3" 230lbs so finding the larger sizes upon arrival was too much work & stress for my liking. Go prepared & you’ll be glad you did. I still have my complete outfit. It got trashed at the bull fight. I got doused with sangria. What a blast..sure the actual bull fight was a bit disturning, but what a party!! Sangria & fruit flying everywhere. Bands playing in the stands. I got so wasted during the bull fight I walked out with my seat cushion. Completely unintentional, but I’m glad I still have it as a token of the most awesome experience in my 36 years on earth.
Just wanted to say thanks for all the info. This is going to be my first visit, and I am seeking all the info possible. I’m going solo so anyone that wants to meet up and show me around would be very appreciated. Kent. khallamore2@netscape.net
