where do you leave your bags?
Fri, 10/23/2009 - 23:49
This is probably a stupid question…but what if you get to a city really early in the morning. Rather than tour the city with a giant backpack on your back, where do you leave it? I assume you can only check in to most hostels in the afternoon? Or, if you book them for the night, will they let you lock your bag there during the day??
thanks!
I am leaving from Canada with $5000 for 38 days

Most hostels will indeed let you keep your pack there while you wait for check-in time. If that’s not an option for whatever reason, many train stations have lockers or places where you can leave your lugagge.
thank you!!! I kind of figured, because who would want to lug all that around! Sounds great, thanks!! PS. How far in advance should you book a hostel, do you know?? We have an itinerary planned out, but of course once you are there and maybe a train is delayed or something…can you just get to a city and go to the hostel? Or should you book in advance. First time doing this alone!!

depends. if you are traveling in low season, it shouldn’t be hard to just show up and find a hostel (although it would help to know which ones were highly rated/recommended in the town and where they were). If in high season (june-august particularly) book ahead by several weeks if possible.

We are going March 11-April 8…I think it is slower at that time? Although a lot of schools in canada have spring break…so I wonder if that will be a popular time

That time of year shouldn’t be too hectic, unless you happen to hit a city during a major festival or something along those lines. I’d book your first night(s) in London and your last night in Paris so you’re not stressed about accommodation upon arrival and right before heading home. Beyond that, it’s up to you. Booking ahead will give you peace of mind, but give you less flexibility to break away from your itinerary. You should be ok during that time of year booking a day or two in advance before you head to a new city, or even taking your chances booking on arrival if you have to.
