wine vacation
Mon, 01/11/2010 - 14:17
I feel like going on a vacation in southern europe this spring with my girlfriend. We want it to be chilled out and with some cultural excursions, good food and good wine. Does anyone have a favourite place for something like that? We would like to visit some small towns as well and try the wine from the farmers on a bicycle trip for a few days. The rest of the days we would stay in a relaxed town with lots to see. We are not sure where to go though
What are your expereiences?

Florence pops into my mind. Tuscany has excellent food and wine, and small towns to visit, and the cultural aspects of Florence are superb: art, architecture, history, all in one concentrated place. I would also visit nearby cinque terre for the seaside scenery.
Madrid, Toledo
Dublin, Dingle, Dublin
Bruges, Ardennes, Bastogne, Brussels
London
How about Spain? There are wineries in many regions, and with the geographical and cultural diversity it offers you have lots of possibilities.
Spain would be wonderful.
We had a good time wandering around the Loire in France last spring.
Leaving Nantes, we drove east, following the Loire River, from Saumur to Chenonceaux in the Loire Valley.
Along with the fancy chateaux and larger wineries, there are many small mom-and-pop wine operations along the way, and spectacular scenery.
You could base yourselves in Amboise or Blois and take some nice bike trips.
I agree with Cil’s suggestion of the Loire Valley. I spent two weeks in Tours last summer. The region is very bike-able (fairly flat, some rolling hills) and if you’re into Chateaux, there’s lots to see. There are also small wineries around every corner. The region is famous for their sweet white wines.
Lyon is also another great culinary stop, and it’s not too far away. The city’s bouchons are famous—this is where hearty French dishes like cassoulet come from. The Burgundy region is just north of Lyon and would provide excellent opportunities for wine tasting. I highly recommend the inexpensive tours offered by the city’s office of tourism. A stop in Lyon would also put you extremely close to Germany, Switzerland, and Italy if you wish to continue your travels.

Spain sounds great , perhaps around Seville somewhere they have wine … Also Loire Valley for the biking sounds very interesting..
but I think we will go with Tuscany first to see since it it really seems so wonderful for wine and culture
I would like to go to all those places
Thanks!
