I am an American who has worked "black" in both London and Scotland and am planning to go back to Ireland and Ibiza to do it this winter, but I’ve had an attack of conscience.
I’m just wondering if anybody besides me feels bad about the fact that while we’re traveling to and living in these other countries because we love them and appreciate their culture, we’re still breaking their laws? We’re the illegal scourge of their country. We’re no different than the Mexican and Cuban illegals in this country that everyone gets so excited about. In fact, we might be worse because most of us aren’t trying to escape an oppressive regime or awful poverty. We’re just bumming around and bending the rules when it suits us. Are we excused by the fact that most of our illegal work is at crappy jobs for crappy wages, or because most countries make it nearly impossible to work legally unless you’re a student?
Maybe I’m ranting, but I’m curious if anyone else is bothered by this.
