Faial Resort Hotel
The year of 1893 represents the beginning of a new age of the telecommunications in North Atlantic. Among the different companies of submarine cables that arrived to Horta, connecting the old and the new world, we find Western Union Telegraph Company. This company was at that time established in Horta, erecting a small neighborhood to lodge and support their employees. In 18th September 1924, Faial and New York are connected by cable, giving birth to a new technology in telecommunications.
After the submarine cables time came to the end, Western Union abandoned the island. Between 1938 and 1945, after the establishment of regular transatlantic flights by Panamerican, with route through Horta, these installations were used by that company to lodge their passengers.
Finally in 1973 some local people, foreseeing the promising touristic future of Faial Island, assembled themselves to make use of Western Union’s physical structure and give birth to what is still today the biggest hotel in Faial Island: the Faial Hotel.
