It is a both a fishing and agricultural village with a rich Moorish history taking its name from Arabic, “Naricha” meaning “abundant springs”. Nerja has an old world feel and offers pleasantly mild coastal weather in dreamy surroundings of golden sandy beaches and dramatic cliffs. The perfect place to spend your holidays at Nerja. Nerja cuisine is typically Mediterranean and includes specialties such as “tortilla de bacalao con miel de caña” (cod omelette smothered with cane honey), traditional “migas” (sauteed breadcrumbs) and, of course, the well known fresh fish from the area. Upon arrival in Frigiliana, one can feel its Moorish past in a village decorated with orange roof tiles contrasting with the dramatically white-washed façades. The old section, commonly called the “barribarto” by its people, is an endless succession of narrow, winding streets filled with multicolored flowers, where in the early-morning hours, wicker baskets and typical ceramics hang outside the shops.
