Directions- By walk: 20 minutes. Follow the signs “Palagiovani”, walk down to Piazza Grande, and follow the shopping arcades to the end: when you arrive at Ristorante Dell’Angelo take a right and walk up the hill following the street on your left. At the crossroad take a left and keep on walking to the big crossroad with traffic lights. Cross the street and keep on walking for about 60 metres in Via Varenna: you’ll find us at number 18, on your right.
- By bus: 10 minutes. Take bus number 31 (direction Ascona) or 36 (direction Losone) and get off at the stop “Cinque Vie” (the fifth one). Cross the street and walk for about 60 metres: you’ll find us on your right.
- By “Centovalli” train: 3 minutes. The train leaves from the underground station “Centovalli” (there’s more or less a train every hour): make sure that it stops at the first stop “Sant’Antonio”! Once you’re out of the station take a right, cross the street and keep on walking in Via D’Alberti: at the crossroad take a left and walk in Via Varenna for about 50 metres. We’re on your left.
By Car:
At the end of the tunnel take the exit “Locarno” and at the roundabout take the last exit, direction “Orselina/Locarno-Monti”, “Hospital – La Carità”, Città Vecchia”, “Madonna del Sasso”, “Palagiovani”. At the traffic light go straight ahead and take the first street on your left. Then turn left and left again! We’re in Via Varenna 18, on your left.

Because the Canton of Ticino is located almost at sea level (at an altitude of 192 metres), it is possible to enjoy a Mediterranean climate from springtime until the end of November. It also means that a large part of life at the "Palagiovani" is spent outdoors - for example at a "Grigliata" in the inner courtyard surrounded by the building's three wings. Naturally, nearly all the modern double and four-person rooms have a balcony. And it's also pleasant to get together on the veranda or under the pergola.
Palagiovani - the first palace of youth
In addition to the Youth Hostel, the unique "Palace of Youth" also houses Ticino's local radio station, a youth bureau and the music school. There's always something going on in this stately house. The Palagiovani is also suitable for congresses, thanks to its various seminar rooms. Some family rooms are even equipped with a kitchenette.
Film festival, Piazza Grande etc.
Just past the Youth Hostel begins the old city centre of Locarno. Its centre is the Piazza Grande where in summer there are festivals and events almost every week. The most famous festival is the film festival in august.
But there is even more in Locarno: the big arcades along the Piazza Grande that invite you for shopping, and the magnificent view over Locarno and the Lago Maggiore from the pilgrimage church Madonna del Sasso. You can reach the church easily by funicular or by foot taking the Via Crucis.
