The name of Side derives from the ancient name for the Pomegranate, the symbol of fertility. This symbol can be seen on a number of artifacts, in particular the coins of the period. The ancient city of Side was founded approximately 700 years BC. It is know that before the Turks settled in the area a number of civilizations (Hittites, Syrians, Persians, Greeks and Romans) lived there. Its good relations with Rome and the boundless wealth of those days provided the opportunity for the construction of the magnificent buildings. Important structures worth seeing today are the ancient Side Theatre, the Temples of Apollo and Athena, City Gates, the Aqueducts, the Harbor of Side, the Monumental Fountains and the Side Baths. Some of these structures have had their restoration completed while some ancient remains have been rebuilt ( such as the Theatre, the Harbor and the Temple of Apollo).
