Changelog

Availability of all hostels in a city

Today I launched the functionality to allow you to specify your arrival date and the number of nights you plan to stay in a city on the city hostel page and it will show you the availability for all the hostels in that city for the days you specified.

I also added this functionality to the Trip Planner, so if you have entered your days and then click on ‘Book Hostel’ on a city, it will show you the availability of all the hostels in that city for the days you will be there.

I was finding it very tedious and annoying to have to go back and forth between the city list and the hostel pages

Railsaver added to Trip Planner

I added the Railsaver logic to the Trip Planner so now you can determine the best rail pass for an itinerary with a single click of a button. This functionality is also integrated with flights, so if you fly specific legs, those legs will not be considered in the rail pass query.

If you have feedback please let me know. I am still planning on adding more details to the specific legs as well as anything you all think would be helpful…

Flights added to the Trip Planner

This is a big release.

Trip Feasibility Feature

I added a ratings system to Trips to show the Trip Feasibility and the Trip Budget.

Major rewrite of Trip Planner

This update has been in the works for a while. This is a major rewrite of the trip planning application. The following is a quick breakdown of some of the major changes.

  • A new more intuitive interface.
  • The ability to ‘Copy’ trips that are published. This allows you to start planning from an existing trip.
  • I introduced the concept of ‘Published’ and ‘Unpublished’ trips.

Updated Eurotrip Planner

I released a pretty big upgrade to the Eurotrip Planning application today. If you already have a trip planned, you will not notice much of a change other than a slightly faster interface.

The main upgrade is in the way that the Eurotrips are initially created. Before, you had to become a member and then create a trip and then add all of your details.

Updated hostels and new rating system

If you have checked out the Hostels section recently, you will notice that the cities pages are a whole lot prettier than they were before. This is something I have been working on for the past couple weeks…

In addition to a facelift, I have also added a couple new features:

  • You can now see the Value of a hostel and how the hostels ranks in value. This score is based on the customer rating and the price of the hostel.
  • I have also added the ability to sort the hostels by Value, Rating or Price.

Eurotrips in the forums

I added an automatic forum signature that includes the trips a user is taking if they have created any.

This feature is an attempt to make the Eurotrips more transparent to the forum so when the community is answering questions for someone, the context of the person’s eurotrip is only one click away.

I found it difficult to give good feedback in the forum without knowing what the person’s travel plans were, hopefully this feature will help with that problem.

Integrated Hostels in the Trip Planner

In addition to a bunch of smaller changes, this is the main change…

I had rolled out the new Eurotrip Hostels feature about a week ago and now I have integrated into trips. This allows you to book hostels directly in your trips.

Give it a go and if you have problems, please post them here

Speed up forum front page

I have modified some queries so that the front page of the forum loads a little faster. It is only slightly better. I have reduced the load time from about 7 seconds to about 5 seconds (for logged in users). Not ideal, but an improvement…

surprisingly, the stuff that takes the longest to load is the ‘Last post’ information. Is there information in there that is not required? I may be able to trip out the fat some more, but I am not sure how I would do it yet.

Cheers,

Will
