Flight to Dublin and back to Vancouver are not included.
Is it possible to have all the transportation, food, hostels, and even most of my pocket money, to be covered by $3000??
Is it even possible to get to Istabul from Athens, Greece by train??
Any suggestions or tips or even any sidetrips that wouldn’t cost much are very much welcome, thanks!
I think $3,000 budget is barely doable if it doesn’t include tansAtlantic flight
Flights to/from Vancover: $1,000 to $1,400
City to city transportation: $150 per week or $600
Daily living: $75 per day or $2,250
Emergency cash: $200
I’d prefer to have an extra $500 since you’ve picked a number of expensive cities.
According to eurail.com, the Greek rail company has suspended international service, so it may not be possible right now. I think you’d want to fly this anyway as I think the train ride was something like 16 hours. IMO, spending the time and money involved in getting to Athens and Istanbul is a huge waste for this trip. You’re likely to kill a full day getting to Athens and another full day getting to Istanbul. What you want to see and do in Greece isn’t in Athens and you don’t have enough time to get to an island or elsewhere in Greece. When you figure travel time, Istanbul needs at least 3 days and you have no chance to get elsewhere in Turkey.
Why 3 days in Naples and 3 days in Milan? I’d skip Milan (or spend a day there) and visit Naples as a day trip from Rome, althoug you may want more time in the area to visit Pompeii or coastal resorts. I’d either cut Ireland or spend more time there so you have a chance to get out of Dublin and see Ireland. I like Ireland and Dublin’s a decent city, but it’s just that, a city. You’re visiting a lot of big cities.
Thanks for the comment!!
What I meant to say was that the flight to and from Vancouver is separate from the $3000. I just wanted to know if its at all possible for all the rail ticket costs, hostels and food to be covered by $3000. It seems that it is based on what you wrote:
City to city transportation: $150 per week or $600
Daily living: $75 per day or $2,250
Emergency cash: $200
600+2250+200=3050
And of course I have a separate amount for emergency money that is not included in the $3000.
We added Greece and Istanbul since it’s nearby (Europe locationwise) and it’s one of my must-see-places. Lots of places to see in Greece like the Parthenon or the Kapalı Çarşı (Grand Bazaar) in Istanbul. I just added Milan since its on the way to Venice, but I will probably change that to a day instead of three and just prolong my stay in Rome and have Naples as a side trip insetead of 3 days too. (Thanks!) Finally, about Ireland, Flight Centre has a 3 day tour called Southern Rocker, that starts from Dublin to Killarney then to Ennis. Yes, our plan is to visit the big cities as our first Europe trip so there’s (hopefully) less chance to get lost or something.
I’m not sure if I was clear or not, but the $3000 is per person, not for 3 people.
As I said, budget is minimal, but doable. However, you really don’t have enough for luxuries. I think you’re going to find that a group tour of Ireland and the expense of getting to Greece and Turkey are luxuries. The $75 daily living covers hostel dorm, eating from markets and street vendors, the occasional beer or wine, somewhat limited admission fees, local transportation, laundry and misc. While $150 per week for city to city transportation is a rule of thumb, you’ll have to be really lucky to cover flights from Dublin to London Eurostar to Paris and flights to Athens and Istanbul in that average.
While I liked Greece and loved Turkey, unless you have at least a week (preferably 2) I think you’re wasting time and money on Greece and Turkey. Have you considered more time inEastern Europe? It’s cheaper, friendlier, prettier and in many ways more interesting….
Hahaha, truthfully, Ireland, Greece, and Istanbul were secondary choices compared to London, Paris and Italy cities which are our main priority for our 1st Euro trip (Eastern Europe for next time
