So we need serious help, this is the original itinerary that we had, and were planning on staying with friends in london, newcastle, marseille and milan. But the plans for marseille and milan might not be possible. so i was looking for some suggestions for cheap, and interesting places to go for three 18 year old girls…on a tight budget…
thank you!
Why Marsailles? The food and wine are great, but for the most part it’s one of the world’s busiest freight ports. Try the Nice, Cannes, Antibes or any of the otehr Riviera towns if you want beaches. Try elsewhere in Provence/Alps Maritime if you want quaint medieval villages and Provencal scenery, food, wine, etc.
Why Milan? It’s got a few interesting sights for a tourist, but for the most part it’s a big, expensive, bustling business center. Unless you’re into high end shopping (and the same stuff’s probably cheaper in NYC) there’s not much o f interest after a day. It’s a transportation hub, so maybe OK as a base for day trips, but I’d pick just about any other place in Italy instead.
For cheaper beaches try Croatia or the tiny bit of Adriatic coast in Slovenia — absolutely gorgeous. There are also great beaches along the Black Sea in Bulgaria, Romania or Crimea (Ukraine) and these will be very cheap by comparison to France and Spain. The Greek Isles have wonderful beaches and you might be able to find cheap flights or even cheap vacation packages from UK.
oldlady, thanks for your suggestions, the only reasons we chose marseille and milan are because there are people there that we can stay with…but since that might not logistically work out anyway, I will definitely look into your suggestions!
Well, Since you have people you can stay with, Marsailles and Milan should be relatively cheap and both would be good bases for day trips to more interesting places. Lake Lugano (Switzerland), Genoa, Bologna and even Venice and Florence are doable day trips from Milan. Venice is a stretch as a day trip, but it would be one way to see the place (I love it) on the cheap. Day trips from Marseilles require more time on the train, so are less workable, but the scenery from the train is nice. St. Raphael would be a doable day trip and maybe Cannes. Nice and Monte Carlo would be a stretch but maybe you could do an overnight trip from Marseilles to kind of explore the Riviera.
