Istanbul during Ramadan
My father and I are planning a short trip to Istanbul from August 3-10 (it’s the only time we can both take off). He is a very well-seasoned traveler in Europe and the Middle East, and I am a recent college grad with a keen interest in Muslim culture and Turkish society, so when I first discovered that our trip would overlap with Ramadan, it didn’t bother me at all. Now, however, I am concerned that we won’t be able to go into certain mosques or see certain attractions due to the holiday.
The Great Circular European Railway Challenge
I’ve just completed organising and executing
The Great Circular Indian Railway Challenge, see gcirc.wordpress.com
and I’m now at a loose end, so I’m looking at same idea different continent.
Discover Turkey On Line (Video + Stills)
My film “What the Sultan Saw” highlights the history of Turkey & Constantinople/Istanbul, featuring the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman Empires plus modern Turkey.
This tour of western and central Turkey stars the Topkapi Palace, Blue Mosque, Cappadocia (land of scenic fairy chimneys), Ephesus (& other Roman cities), the Turkish Riviera, Turkish folk dancing & belly dancing, shopping for the magic flying carpet, and much more.
The video can be seen on the web, if you have a high speed internet connection.
Istanbul Worth Going Out of the Way For?
I have two options for my October trip this year. One is to land in Munich and make my way down to Rome through Prague, Krakow, Budapest, Vienna, and Slovenia. The other is to land in Rome and then take some route to Istanbul.
I am a student of history and Istanbul is a major draw for me, but getting there from Rome seems difficult. One way that I planned was to arch north up to Budapest and then back south and reach Istanbul through Bucharest. Another way was to go through the Croatian coast down to Athens and ferry over from Greece.

Need advice for future Eurotrip
Hi, I’m new to this so if anyone can give me feedback I’d appreciate it. OK, here it goes:
My friends and I want to take a Eurotrip in the summer of 2011, during college. You can find the itinerary and such under my username, but it is basically this:
Fly out of Boston to LONDON
then PARIS, AMSTERDAM, BERLIN, PRAGUE, ROME, ATHENS, and ISTANBUL and return home.
I have planned it to be for 42 days, 6 weeks exactly and had some trouble coming up with a decent budget.
Need help getting from Rome to Istanbul
I’m so glad I found this forum. This is my first trip and I’ve found the hardest part is deciding how I’m actually going to reach these locations. Looking at a map is fine, but in practice I’m clueless. So, eurotrip members, please help me reach the following locations. I’m open to any suggestion.
New Years Eve in Istanbul
Hey everybody!
I just booked my hostel in Istanbul from Dec 30-Jan 1 2009. I’m traveling alone and would love to have something awesome to do on NYE – does anyone have any suggestions or experiences of Istanbul on New Years? I’ve been doing some poking around, but a lot of the stuff I see is sort of crap touristy stuff (very expensive!), but I’d be up for something tacky if it was fun!
Thanks!
