2008 spent abroad... any advice?
Mon, 05/21/2007 - 15:42
hi, i’m new here!
my friend and i are planning to spend the greater part of 2008 exploring europe. we’ve just started discussing things, but figured i’d start tapping into whatever online resources i could find!
we are planning to live and work in several countries for a few months at a time, and doing tons of other travelling in our spare time (be it on the weekends or whenever we get a chance)
right now our itinerary is along the rough lines of…
january/february – london (or somewhere nearby in england – figured it’d be best to start in an english speaking country…)
march/april – france – anyone have any ideas of the best places to stay here? not so sure i’d want to do the whole paris thing…
may/june/july – greece (probably just athens, unless theres any other suggestions!)
july/august/september – rome
october/november – spain (probably as far south as possible so we won’t be cold!)
then back home to the states for the christmas season!!
does anyone know the best places to find out about subletting apartments, and finding odd jobs for a few months in each country?!
pretty much at this point i’m taking any and all advice that i could!!
thanks in advance!!

Will you be in Greece all 3 months? Athens has most of the jobs (and is a cool city to live in during, say, November-April)…but for the time of year you will be there, I highly suggest choosing another place in Greece to spend your 3 months. Rhodes, Corfu, Zakynthos are some destinations that come to my mind. Or, you can split it up like this: Thessaloniki in May, Rhodes or Corfu in June/July.
Spain will be very pleasant, for the most part, in October. In November you can “hibernate” in Madrid.
Unless you find a job in the Alps for the tail-end of ski season, I think that Paris is perfect for March and April. March is cool and rainy, and not really worth it along the coasts, not even on the Mediterranean. I’m suggesting Paris for March, for the same reason I suggested Madrid for November; larger cities for the cooler months…smaller towns in the warmer months.

From the states? Not as easy as it sounds to work and to stay in Europe that long. EU countries are fairly protective. With unemployment nearing 25% in France, you can see why such a country might want to give jobs to their own first.
Best check into visa stipulations as well. Normally you’re limited to 3 months as a tourist. You’ll probably need a job offer if you hope to stay longer.
Even if you have some skills – like teaching English – it isn’t easy to get a job offer. Employers usually have to prove that you’re so much more special than a local that they have no choice but to hire you.
How are your language skills? No one wants an employee who can’t understand directions, fill out forms, converse with clients, etc. in the home language.
Maybe others here will have some more optimistic advice for you. Good luck anyway.
Russ, unemployment in France is around 8 to 10%. Not 25%.
ossible to find a job that pays under the table, but if you keep moving from city to city…don’t expect to easily find odd jobs everywhere you go. You may be able to find under-the-table work, waiting tables or working for a beach-front water sports business somwhere in France or Spain or Greece….but there are reports that the EU might start cracking down on these, in addition the the stiff competion you face from EU students also looking for a summer working holiday.
Twistedtree,
Russ brings up a very good point.
Where are you from? As Russ points out, if you are not an EU national, it will be incredibly difficult to find work. It’s still
Have you thought about applying to work at a hostel, in the city or town of your choice, and living there for several months, and then backpacking Europe? They may be able to help you get a work permit.

You might be able to get some under-the-table work during the grape harvest.
Unemployment for those under 25 in France – which I assumed includes Mr. Twisted – is right around 25%:
