32 days, lotsa cities, is a railpass worth it?!
Mon, 03/29/2010 - 18:55
Heyyo,
I have been trying to shuffle through the forums to look for answers to my questions, but I am getting a bit of information overload. Anywho, here are my questions! :
1.) We are visiting about 20 cities (some are half-day smaller excursions from bigger cities) in 32 days. We’re flying from Ireland to Spain and from there possibly taking trains around to the rest of our cities to finally end in London. We’re looking at getting the 21 day global pass. Do you think this would be the best idea or would buying point-to-point train tickets with flying to longer distances be more cost efficient? I tried to use the RailSaver, but wasn’t able to put in all the cities we’ll be visiting.
2.) Since we are planning on travelling using trains across long distances, we’re hoping to utilize sleeper trains to cut down daytime spent travelling. I’ve read in the forum that sleepers aren’t included in the eurail pass. Does this mean that the whole price isn’t included or that there is an extra charge for using a sleeper train?
3.) Are the passes good for all trains, no matter of the booking company?
I would appreciate any information, related to the questions or not!
I am leaving from Norfolk, Virginia, United States with $3300 for 33 days
London, Dublin, Málaga, Barcelona, Rome, Zürich, Munich, Vienna, Budapest, Prague, Berlin, Amsterdam, London

1. What did railsaver recommend for as many cities as you did fit in?
2. Your railpass will be your ticket for virtually every train you take including overnight trains. It does not cover reservations and supplements which are required on overnight trains. Figure 20 to 30 euros reservation/supplement in addition to the railpass (your “ticket) for each overnight train you take.
3. I don’t know what you mean by “booking company” but your pass will be good on any transportation (including a small number of buses, ferries, cruise lines) operated by the national rail companies in the countries it covers. With the exception of a few privately owned scenic rail lines (mostly in Switzerland) and Eurostar, the chunnel train, that’s just about “every train.”
oldlady,
Thank you so much for helping us!
I ran a trimmed down itinerary through railsaver and this is what it had to say:
— Always Railpasses – Eurail Global 15 Day 2nd Class Youth FlexiPass and Czech 3 Day 2nd Class Adult FlexiPass
— Most Convenient – Eurail Global 15 Day 2nd Class Youth FlexiPass
— Less Expensive – Eurail Global 10 Day 2nd Class Youth FlexiPass
Am I to assume that the transportation between the cities not listed in the details section should be bought point-to-point or air?
Also, we are leaving things a bit flexible for the possibility of adding/deleting cities for whatever reason. Would a longer (21 day vs. 15 day) railpass be more conducive to this?
Here is our rough itinerary if it might help:
London —> (Salisbury) —> Bristol —> Dublin —> (Cork) —> Malaga —> (Granada) —> Barcelona —> Marseilles —> Venice —> Rome —> (Naples) —> Zurich —> Munich —> Vienna —> Budapest —> Prague —> Berlin —> Copenhagen —> Amsterdam —> London —> HOME.
The cities in parenthesis are day trips in which we’ll be heading back to the previous city to depart. We were planning on using trains for all these aside from Bristol —> Dublin, Dublin —> Malaga and Amsterdam —> London. Do you think this is feasible in a 32 day trip?
Thank you again for any help you can give us!
London, Dublin, Málaga, Barcelona, Rome, Zürich, Munich, Vienna, Budapest, Prague, Berlin, Amsterdam, London
This trip is feasible for 32 days if you want all of your memories to be of buses and subways to get to the train station, train stations, trains, buses and subways to get to your hostel plus a few airport buses, airport check-in lines, airport departure lounges and airplanes and maybe a couple of bus terminals, city to city buses. a ferry terminal and a ferry. Put it in the trip planner so we can see what you’re planning and give you better comments. Start checking rail schedules so you can see how much time will be “ in transit.” For 32 days, I’d limit the total of overnight trains and intra-Europe flights to 5.
