3rd trip: Rocky Mountain Train rides
Wed, 04/19/2006 - 07:52
Canadian Rockies specially Jasper and Banff being the prime focus. Perhaps their are better sites to visit but I am told this is the best.
What would be the ideal time to visit ? How many days ? What are the different things to see ? Which is the nearest airport ? Ideal airport ? Any reasonably prices hotels ?
lastly, is it worth it ?
Any feedbacks from travellers from all over the world would be greatly appreciated ?
Ideally, I am looking to fly to Calgary. Drive upto Banff. Take the trains to Jasper and then drive to Edmonton and then fly back out of Calgary.
Via rails tell me that they do not go to Banff anymore ?
I am leaving from US and traveling for 11 days
London, Brussels, Basel, Paris, London
London, Brussels, Basel, Paris, London
Canadian or American Rockies??

I’ve been on this one — I’d recommend train one way and bus the other. The scenery from the highway is also gorgeous, but differs significantly from what you see from the train.

I’ve been on the Silverton train ride too.
Good idea to bring a jacket, even in summer.
I would like to drive as well as take the train.
All trips that i see is somewhere from 7 to 13 days. I am only interested in trips for about 2 days – 3 days max.
Please advice
London, Brussels, Basel, Paris, London

nelson sure is a nice town and that pub is gorgeous
Prices to Calgary is coming out to be very unreasonable. I also don’t need to travel only for the July 4th weekend.
So I am now searching for dates other than this weekend.
I am also being flexible on flying either to edmonton or Calgary which is cheaper.
What do you think would be the ideal fare to go to either of those places ?
London, Brussels, Basel, Paris, London
Calgary is typically cheaper to fly into, as it’s more a major airport then Edmonton. I’m flying into Calgary in just over a week’s time.
Keep in mind that the Calgary Stampede is just about to get underway, which is probably going to raise the price of just about everything. There are going to be a lot of people in town (including myself) for the next few weeks.
Nivid,
Stampede sounds fun. What is it ?
I am now concentrating on Calgary as you pointed out. Hoepfully in the next few weeks, I should be able to figure out some good tickets.
London, Brussels, Basel, Paris, London
Calgary Stampede = One of the biggest rodeos in the world, with associated parades, western entertainment (both "normal" and truly odd) and boozing.
YEEHAW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m flying to Calgary in the morning. I’ll be back in a week, so i’ll let you know how it goes!!
I have returned from the Canadian rockies. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask, and i’ll see if I can help out
Hello Nivid,
Please give us a brief on the trip. Where exactly did you go ? How expensive is it ? What is a must see ?
Just recieved the specials from Rocky Mountaineer and the cheapest I see is 9K USD. Cannot believe it ?
Seeing those prices, is making my vacation geared more towards Europe.
I will have more questions for you tommorow.

Sorry it took me so long to reply. I tried making a reply a few days ago, but the post got deleted. Here it goes again.
I stayed with friends in Calgary, so I did not have any accomadation costs. Since I was based in Calgary, I did day trips out of the city, and returned at night. This made for some long tiring days. It’s really not that expensive though, but I did save money there.
So, during my week, I went to the Calgary Stampede, also toured the city of Calgary, went to Canmore and Banff, went white water rafting in Golden, British Columbia, checked out Alberta’s other major city, Edmonton, and then toured some the the ranch country south of Calgary.
1) The Calgary stampede. This is something you have to see. Unfortunatly it’s only on 10 days every July, so you’l have to wait until next year to see that again.
2) Banff National Park. If you’ve been to Interlaken, Switzerland, then you’ll know what kind of town Banff is. I did not go to Jasper as I heard it was very similar. Also, be sure to make it to Lake Louise if you get the chance. In Banff, you can go to the hot springs, and also take the gondola up to the top of Sulfur mountian.
3) I went white water rafting with Hydra raft, who are based out of Banff. We departed from Banff and we were shuttled out the the river site in BC. The Kicking Horse river is one of the best, so try to go to that one, if it interests you any.
4) Don’t bother wasting your time on Edmonton. It’s just another big city, with no real appeal. I only went there to see the West Edmonton Mall (the largest mall in all of North America). I can now say that i’ve been, but wouldn’t rush back.
5) Do try and get out of the city, and away from the Rockies. I went and drove through some ranch country, and loved it. The terrain is unlike any i’ve seen before.
I rented a car for 3 days when I was there and it was really a cheap way to travel around.
Excellant and thank you

No problem, hope it helped
I am not sure but why Rocky Mountaineer does not seem to have any train rides less than 9 days. I am only looking no more than 2 days or max of 3.
All websites indicate Rocky Mountaineer to be one of the best rides, hwoever paying 9k is too expensive.
Is it really worth it ?
