5 wk EuroTrip
Fri, 04/29/2011 - 15:20
I’m trying to cut down the trip time to 5 weeks(flexible if not able to to 5 1/2 wks) I have been wanting to go to the backpacking trip for awhile now. So I’m trying to visit all the touristy places when I’m still young (age 24 M) Any advice would be of great help. Im thinking of cutting out Nice and Barcelona, so from Switzerland I can just go straight to Paris. To cut some time down. Not really into art that much though I do want to visit the museums. I usually just glance at them then walk by so I go through them quickly. Trying to keep the budget low, but I can add on if necessary. Maybe 3500 – 4000 plus air fare($1500 LAX)?
my itinerary so far
http://www.eurotrip….
I am leaving from Los Angeles, LAX with $3600 for 43 days
Rome, Florence, Cinque Terre, Venice, Grindelwald, Zürich, Innsbruck, Munich, Prague, Berlin, Amsterdam, Bruges, Paris, London

Well, part of the problem is that you’re backtracking. Why are you going back to London? You can fly back home from a different city.
Your itinerary looks more like 6 weeks, than 5 1/2. And when you say “2 days Berlin”, I’m only counting that as one full day, and one day partly spent getting there.
For Brussels, you wrote “3 days” which is really 2 full days. You can drop a day from Brussels. (Or even spend a full day in Liège instead of Brussels). You can also drop a day from Paris…this city is definitely worth visiting, but 2 full days in Paris is fine, if you want to keep Nice and Barcelona….and I recommend keeping both. In fact, I would say increase your time in Nice to 2 full days. On one of the 2 days, take a daytrip to a nearby town (not Monaco).
There’s so much more…oy…..when is this trip? Have you browsed past threads, looked at any previously suggested itineraries? Which countries are priority for you on this trip? You picked great destinations all around. But it’s a bit too many, and not enough coast/countryside/smaller town, IMO.

I would do Brussels as a day trip from Paris or Amsterdam or make it a 3/4 day stop-over en route to Amsterdam. I would stay in cheaper and more interesting (unless classical music is your thing) Bratislava instead of Vienna, or cut Vienna entirely. Add any extra days to Prague, Grindelwald or Nice. If you want to experience Provence/southern France as opposed to just see Nice, I’d add a couple of days or fly from Italy to Spain and save this part of France for your next trip when you can spend more time there.
luv_the_beach- I’m trying to trim the trip down and I have been looking actively at all forums. All countries are my priority haha. But I am trying to cram in all the great cities with no specific place in mind. The trip so far is planned for August 4th- to Sept 13th. But the date is flexible up to a couple of days. Just need to be back before September 16th due to school starting.
oldlady- So for Brussels I was planning on doing day trips around Belgium like seeing Bruges and Liege. Is it not worth it? Which is the best to visit if I do a day stop? Nice was a stop over to see southern France. I’m trying to get most of my trip when I’m young, so maybe I will skip Nice then.

I like Brussels, but I’m in the minority here. The medieval square is worth a visit (and a re-visit after dark as it’s lighted); beer, waffles and chocolate are great but available anywhere in Belgium. I liked Brussels for it’s cosmopolitan vibe — Caribbean beats on one street corner, African on the next, hugely diverse population, modern architecture that’s a jaw-dropping tribute to the unbelievably massive bureaucracy that is the EU. I don’t think Brussels itself is a great tourist destination and most here prefer Brugges. Brussels does work well for day trips. We enjoyed a day trip to Bastogne for the Battle of the Bulge history and museum/memorial.
I like the Riviera, Alpes Maritime and the entire Provence region. However it takes some time to get around and, to me, it’s an area to slow down, explore and experience as opposed to just visit a city. A couple of days in Nice would be great, and I hate to recommend skipping it. However, a week or more in the area would be so much better….
Looks like I will be taking out Barcelona and Nice. i figure I can always go back for a more relaxing vacation. After doing more research I want to go to street parade in Zurich on Aug 13th, so now I am trying to plan around that. How is flying out of Rome? Is Grindelwald that much different from Zurich?
