8 weeks 10 countries
Wed, 11/14/2007 - 22:31
[=“arial”][=“2”]Howdy,
First time backpacker here! this forum seems like a great place to get some opinions on my itinerary so I appreciate any feedback
Using an 10trip eurail ticket im going for 8 weeks from 21 July – 21 August, this itinerary includes travel time. Also the destinations are not locked in although its peak season im keen to go off the beaten trail away from tourist.
London 2 days
Paris 5 days
Amsterdam 5 days
Dresden 2 days
Prague/Ceske Krumlov 5 days
Vienna/Salzburg 5 days
Interlaken 5 days
Venice/Rome/Capri 7 days
Athens 2 days
Istanbul 5 days
Greek Islands 5 days
Fly back to London 3 days then back to Australia.
What you think? typical first timer itinerary should I change anything
[/][/]

All looks good to me except Dresden, why would you want to go there? Also Paris is a shithole, so to is Athens, I would cut my time in Paris, probably drop Athens and spend a few more days in London or Rome, perhaps add Florence to your time in Italy.
Also how are you planning to get from place to place?
1. I disagree that Paris is a “shithole”. Most people like Paris. It’s one of the world’s most attractive cities, with lots to see and do.
2. Athens is not a “shithole”, but it’s not Venice either (some European cities like Athens and Rotterdam, don’t have much historic architecture), however Athens has a lot of historical sites to see (the most impressive and complex Classical Greek sites you’ll see anywhere), and some charming old quarters that have been massively renovated and gentrified within the past 5 years. 2 days is good.
I’ve re-worked your itinerary:
London 2 days
Paris 3-4 days
Amsterdam 4 days
Dresden and Munich 5 days
Prague/Ceske Krumlov 4 days
Vienna/Salzburg 5 days
Interlaken 4- 5 days
Venice/Rome/Capri 8-9 days
Corfu 3 days
Athens 1-2 days
Rhodes 2-4 days
Kusadasi, then up to Istanbul 4-5 days
Fly from Istanbul to London 2 days then back to Australia.

I concur with Luvthebeach’s post.
Looks like a great trip.
hi chitmunkey

sounds like an awesome trip! i disagree with luv_the_beach tho, u gotta hop around the greek islands!
hope u have a great time! [
Thanks for your replies.
The only reason we are going to dresden was its so close to the czech border and once we get into czech a train ticket is alot cheaper.
We’re planning on using the eurail system, most likely the global pass which has unlimited stops through out europe. At least that way if we meet other backpackers and stray from our itinerary we dont have to worry if we go over our 10 trips.
Do you have any other suggestions on traveling from country to country? also we are planning on staying maybe 2 days in the heart of the city then travelling to a smaller town for a few days.
Paris is locked in because my gf is fixated on going there.
I like the re-worked itinerary except for one thing, it may be a problem finishing in istanbul as there arn’t any budget airlines from istanbul to london.
What about EasyJet?
Actually, I did suggest two Greek Islands: Corfu and Rhodes. Both of which are fabulous, amazing islands.
Aside from the fact that these two islands are themselves amazing and beautiful destinations: Corfu will help break up the long commute from Capri/Naples to Athens; Rhodes can act as a spring-board to Turkey.
Listen to her. It’s a great city.
As Cil mentioned, easyJet is a good option. The airline offiers service from Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) to London Luton. SAW is Istanbul’s secondary airport after Ataturk International (IST).
I tried looking on easyJet’s website www.easyjet.com for fares on this route (one way SAW-LTN) for August 18 or 19, 2008, and it said that this route will be “on sale” until March 29, 2008, but it wouldn’t give me a price. It looks like you’ll be able to find a cheap flight from Istanbul to London on easyJet, but unfortunaltey there’s some kind of glitch with the website, so I wasn’t able to determine how cheap (unless it’s the computer I’m using
firewall, blocked pop-ups, whow knows whatthat’s not letting me find a price). Take a look at easyJet’s website.beach-lunch-siesta-beach-shower-dinner-nightlife-repeat
Easyjet sounds like a great option there Cil
Thanks for taking the time to look into that flight from Istanbul to London too luv, sounds like a great idea.
Stopping off at Corfu looks nice, because that boat trip from brindisi is about 12hrs
I was hopping to have about 8-10 days in the greekislands of just relaxing before moving on to Turkey.
Thanks for your help
Corfu and Rhodes are very well-known to Europeans, and actually receive many more annual tourists than Santoríni and Mykonos (Rhodes and Corfu airports are the country’s 4th and 5th busiest, after the big city airports in Athens, Thessaloníki, and Heraklion). But because Corfu and Rhodes are larger than Santoríni and Mykonos, they can fit all those tourists and not seem crowded. The tourists tend to concentrate in certain resort areas (stay away from Kávos in Corfu and Faliráki in Rhodes which are big drunk Brit fests), and the tourists do not overwhelm these islands, nor do they overwhelm the islands’ beautiful main towns (unlike Santoríni and Mykonos).
For whatever reason, however, these islands are not well-known to non-Europeans (Americans, Australians, Canadians, Japanese), who overlook them, in favor of the stereotypical Greece: the Cycladic Islands. The Cycladic Islands are beautiful, but Corfu and Rhodes are equally beautiful places, and
at the same timefar more convenient to your itinerary.beach-lunch-siesta-beach-shower-dinner-nightlife-repeat
sounds good.
where in Aus are you?
im in Perth and doing a similar trip in august 08
Anyway luv_the_beach’s advice here is very good
if you took one day off Istanbul and a few Amsterdam – you could add in another greek island – however if you plan to revisit Europe in the future – the way you have it planned is good i think.
But if you don’t think you will repeat it – I would suggest maybe even visiting Antalya (i think its spelt) & Cyprus
Working from Luv the Beach’s suggested itinerary ….
Assuming you’ve never been to London, I’d spend an extra day there — I like the place and it’s nice to have an adjustment day (jet lag, lack of sleep, culture shock) at the beginning of your trip. If you end up needing the 1st day to just chill, then you’ve only got one day in London.
Don’t miss Ancient Ephesus when you’re in Kusadasi — the Greeks ought to be ashamed that the Turks do so much better with Greek ruins + there’s some early Christian history if that interests you. If you’re into ruins, Lindos is an interesting visit on Rhodes — Greek ruins in the middle of a medieval crusader’s castle, plus early Christian and crusader history. If you think you’re going to tire of Greek ruins, then skip Athens instead of Ephesus.
