I would definitely leave in april. It’s still considered the low season in some places so prices may be cheaper, and the crowds aren’t as heavy as in the summer. Also, the weather is perfect at that time. Not to hot and not to cold. I was in Europe april-june of this year and found it to be much nicer than mid summer.

Mid-april to mid-june sounds like the perfect time to travel Europe to me. The crowds won’t be there yet, and the weather starts getting warmer. Of course the weather depends on where you go (maybe you could start in the south and then work your way up north), and on luck (if you’re lucky it can be lovely even in more northern countries, if you’re unlucky it can be horrible no matter when you go). Unless you go to Switserland or something you most likely won’t see any snow.

My trip was early April to early June, and weather-wise it was good – only a few days of rain and cooler, but not cold temperatures. And it was downright hot in some places too – Prague and Berlin in May were hot – the day I arrived in Berlin it was 33 degrees celcius. I also did my trip like seraphim suggested, starting in the south (Portugal/Spain), and ended more north (Paris, London).

Hi there,

In fact you didn’t told us where exactly are you going. Maybe itwon’t be snow in avril neither. I prefer avril and late fall: october -november, for example. This, because the european countries are less crowded by that time. and you still have enough daylight for pictures.

So, go in avril if you can…
and enjoy travelling !

Is there snow anywhere in Europe in mid-April?

Shan, the main difference will be tourist/season (crowds and prices), as June and late May is a popular time for non-Europeans (most especially Americans, Canadians, Japanese, etc) to visit the "cliche" sites (Paris, London, Rome, Florence, Venice, and increasingly Barcelona). July and August is when the Europeans go on vacation, most especially to sun-and-beach destinations in Southern Europe (The Mediterrenan and Atlantic coasts of Spain, Greece, Portugal, France, Italy, Croatia, etc) but also increasingly to cities in eastern and central Europe (Prague, Krakow, St. Petersburg, Riga), and other places (like mountain getaways throughout Europe).

So, to take France, for example, expect crowds Americans and Japanese in Paris in June, but expect crowds of French northerners (or Germans, Britons, Russians, Scandinavians) in Corsica, or Biarritz, or the Côte d’Azur in July/August. Cities like Paris, Milan, Rome, and Athens should be dead in August as city dwellers go on holiday and head to the beaches of their respective countries.

similar advice i suppose…

i went from april 12th to June 7th and it was a perfect time to go. I made no hostel reservations until my last 2 cities (Berlin and Amsterdam) and that was just because I had place that people said I needed to stay at. It was certainly cool in London in mid April and even cool in Amsterdam in early June but I would take that anytime to the really hot temps I experienced in Rome and Prague, literally so damn hot in Prague I didnt walk around the city during the main part of the day. If i’m lucky enough to do another trip i’m gonna make it for the same time period, late-april to mid-may.

hope this helps Smile

I think September is the best month to go. The July-August peak has subsided but you still have good weather. Places like Venice and Nice are hot enough to enjoy the beach and a swim in the sea, while places such as Innsbruck and Salzburg are temperate and mostly sunny. No rain at all in September on my Eurotrip, except for Germany of course.

I’m with Homeskillet on this one as most of my big trips have been around September, but since that’s no longer an option, I say go as early in the norhtern hemisphere spring as you can. Plus, many schools in America are now letting out in May, so the travel season has moved slightly forward.

Also, look for festivals/special events in the spring and try to check out some of them if you can. My springtime travel experiences in the spring include Las Fallas in Valencia, Spain (Mid March) and Queensday in Amsterdam (April 30), and a long time ago, the serendipitous stumbling upon a local celebration on the Sunday before Ash Monday on the island of Corfu.

Have a great trip.

Ah, yeah, it was so damn hot in Rome last year everything I saw or did there was at night, when most places are closed anyways. Just going to the store to get water was a dehydrating experience. I was there at the end of June… Horrible weather.

True, I’ll eat my previous post. I’d gone to Rome at the end of June if I had the chance…

Early May – Mid June. Except for Scandinavia and the UK.
All of September. Except for Scandinavia and the UK.

What’s the problem with Scandinavia and to a lesser extent the UK – Rain potential and in Scandinavia lower temps (14-16). Sometimes, summer never comes except for a week or so.
