Advice on cutting cities...
Mon, 03/12/2012 - 10:26
Hi All!
We’re headed from Toronto to Europe but got a little ambitious planning our itinerary. Would someone who is a bit more of an expert be willing to take a look at our itinerary and tell us where we are going wrong? We are 2 days overbooked, and we have far too many cities for 39 or so days we will be traveling.
I personally would be willing to cut Florence and Marseilles out completely, but if anyone has any suggestions about cutting cities, or spending more/less time in each, I would LOVE to hear them. Thanks so much!!!
Thessaloniki – Athens – Kefalonia – Corfu – Bari – Naples – Rome – Florence – Venice – Cinque Terre – Nice – Marseilles – Barcelona – Ibiza – Madrid – Paris – London
I am leaving from Toronto with $3500 for 38 days
London, Paris, Nice, Florence, Cinque Terre, Venice, Rome, Naples, Brindisi, Corfu, Íos, Santorini, Athens, London

I am leaving from Toronto with $5000 for 50 days
Amsterdam, Hamburg, Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, Zürich, Interlaken, Vienna, Budapest, Prague, Kraków

I haven’t heard any great things about Thessaloníki, I would cut it out entirely and give Athens an extra day. And if you plan it right, you can do London in 3 days instead of 4.
Edinburgh, Madrid, London, Segovia, Santiago de Compostela, Toledo, Córdoba, Seville, Granada, Barcelona, Lyon, Nice, Paris, Bruges, Brussels, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Berlin, Prague, Kutná Hora, Vienna, Salzburg, Munich, Füssen, Venice, Milan, Pisa, Florence, Siena, Rome, Pompei, Naples, Dubrovnik, Split, Zagreb, Budapest, Hunedoara, Sighişoara, Bucharest, Sofia, Plovdiv, Istanbul, Selçuk
Porto, Guimarães, Lisbon, Tomar, Sintra, Evora, Lagos, Seville, Málaga, London
Ok! I have to fly from London Stansted to somewhere in Greece, I only picked Thessaloniki because I found it relatively cheap. Good to know, I’ll look to fly to somewhere else in Greece, thanks!
I am doing London for 4 days because I have family there and it will be during the Olympics too, so I can’t cut my time there.
London, Paris, Nice, Florence, Cinque Terre, Venice, Rome, Naples, Brindisi, Corfu, Íos, Santorini, Athens, London
Amsterdam, Hamburg, Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, Zürich, Interlaken, Vienna, Budapest, Prague, Kraków
Donostia, Barcelona, Valencia, Ibiza, Granada, Seville, Madrid, Porto, Lisbon, Albufeira, Lagos, Tangier, Chefchaouene, Fes, Casablanca, Marrakech, Merzouga
Madrid, Barcelona, Ibiza, Granada, Seville
I actually backtracked and reversed the itinerary completely, allowing time for the running of the bulls in Spain. Also cut out Marseilles, Thessaloniki, and Florence. Somehow I’m still over booked
Thanks for your help!

1. Don’t stay overnight in Bari. In either direction take train to or from Rome and take the overnight ferry to or from Corfu.
2. Cut Naples or visit it as a day trip from Rome.
3. Don’t take the time to be in London twice. Look for an open jaw flight and return from Athens, or fly into Athens for the reverse trip.
Just to piggy back on oldlady’s suggestion, flying from Athens to Toronto is morbidly expensive. Take a cheap, late Thursday night flight from Athens into London (try Easyjet or Agean), then fly from London to Toronto on Friday, it’ll be much cheaper.

oldlady – Thank you for the suggestion. We only had Bari because we were going to take the “free” ferry from there to Corfu. Nice to know there is an overnight option!
I would love to cut Naples but my friend is actually from Naples haha so we will be visiting and staying with her family there. Lastly, we already booked round trip flight from Toronto-London. Had I taken the time to do a little research before, I would definitely prefer an open jaw flight, but I didn’t know even know what that meant until this site! haha
Ryfela – We already booked Toronto-London roundtrip. Athens is my last city before London though, so we will fly Athens – London, and I hope that won’t be too expensive.
Thank you both SO much your help, I really need it! So appreciative.

Not sure to what extent there is still a “free” ferry between Italy and Greece. I assume you mean one that’s covered by a rail pass — check rail pass bonuses carefully. You probably have to get your ticket in person at the ferry company office to take advantage of free passage with your rail pass and maybe also to take advantage of pass holder discounts on other ferry lines.
In any case you will probably be on an overnight ferry, so there is no need to plan an overnight in Bari. If you’re going Italy to Greece, allow plenty of extra time to get to the ferry. Actually this is true either way, but I’ve heard more horror stories Italy to Greece than vice versa. Ferries often have 2 hour advance check-in requirements and trains to Bari seem to be late more often than is the norm for Italian trains. Personally, i’d spring for a cabin on the ferry, but if you’re up for the party, discomfort and sleepless night…..

No problmeo! Use skyscanner.com to search fares for your Athens – London flight. Try to pick a flight that flies into the airport you’re flying home to, Gatwick is usually used for Air Transat and Heathrow is used by Air Canada.
