I have to say I am intriqued by these posts. I will have to disagree with some of the posts. I am black from America. I choose not to use African American because I am not. I have a mixture of Native American African American and Caucasian. I think it is a joke that black Americans even use the term African American because when you are outside of America your considered an American. Do we call blacks from holland African Dutch? And before I get bashed here I have lived in greece for a year and I will tell you that it was a revolutionary experience in my life. I had no idea how racist America was until I landed in Greece. As a black man from America in most european nations you will be treated with way more respect than ever received in your own land. And why do I say my own land it is because contrary to popular belief in America if you are born in a country your a citizen of that country. My parents were actually worried about me when I lived in Greece. But I informed them that I’d rather live in Greece than live in Texas. I lived in Texas for two years and it is so racist and segregated it is just a shame, blacks in one neighborhood mexicans in their own neighborhood and white in theirs. It is just a joke. And people actually believe America is a intergrated nation which I think is just sad we have a long way to go. I grew up in Ohio and went to a perdominatly white high school. Kids at this school would try to set me up with the only black girl in the school why? I guess since we were both black we must have everything in commen. Did any of these kids try to set me up with anyone else of any other color, not on your life. But I had a precursor to my trip to greece. We had two spansh exchange students who were girls in my school. And I now look back and wonder why they would always look at me and chatter amoungst themselves in spanish. One day one even gave me a kiss on the cheek. Now after having lived in Greece I know that these girls liked me or found me attractive because I’m black and have kinky hair. Yea kinky hair you know the hair that in America is considered bad hair. I now know that kinky hair is just a texture of hair that the women I encountered in europe loved. Now that is very different from the black american experience. I had a couple Greeks try to set me up with greek women. And I never met any type of resistance if I would speak to any women that was not my nationality. Hell in the U.S.A a black person is ridiculed if they date outside of anyone that is not black. How stupid are we not all Americans? Not in this case you have to date someone who is black. So in a nutshell the ignorance of our nation will stand out if you live in any european nation for a number of months. These are just some of the experiences I have had and I could tell of hundreds more that were just so positive. I always knew being black was special but it was cemented when I had experience after experience in other countries.

The term "African-American" refers specifically to Americans who trace their ancestry predominantly to Africans who were forced into slavery and brought to the United States between the 16th and 19th centuries. No, a Black Dutch person is not called African-Dutch. And "Black" could be anyone of sub-Saharan African descent whether they live in the USA, Kenya, Jamaica, Cuba, Brazil, or Europe. Many African immigrants in the US (someone born and raised in Nigeria, for example) do not consider themselves "African-Americans," because they do not come from that culture.

Russ- I entirely disagree with your surmise that european travel is of low priority for this group. Race has absolutely nothing to do with travel preferences as much as economic situations and geographical locations. First of all, I am black will be traveling to italy, germany and Prague this year and I have many black friends who have done the same. However, because I used to live in the caribbean before I never considered European travel a priority.

Although I too thought it an odd question about being comfortable, it is not as silly as it seems as many persons of non-black descent would not understand. I live in the middle east in a small country north of Iran where black persons are an oddity, to the point of asking you to take your picture on the street- so don’t think it a stupid question. Having, that would be more predominant in the third world countries that do not receive a lot of tourism or expatriate travel.
