I’m thinking about spending two weeks in Albania and Montenegro this September.

I’m very ill informed about these places, so I’d appreciate any information on where to go, what the cost will be like and what the cheapest transport options are. I’ll be going there from Dublin, but can’t seem to find any direct flights from there, so I’ll probably fly to London first. I think I’ll fly in to Albania, work my way up through Montenegro and then catch a ferry to Italy.

Any tips would be great! Also, anyone who wants to come, feel free to get in touch, as so far it’s just me.

I briefly looked into getting to Albania last summer, but couldn’t work it out with our limited time.
FWIW I had looked into Saranda (supposed to be pretty)[image]http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d132/Capresesalad/anotherislandnearBudva.jpg[/image] and Tirena but never got far with my research.
We did take a day trip to Montenegro (pictured) and really enjoyed the coastal region. We rented a car from Dubrovnik, and when we left, we flew out of Split.

Haven’t been there myself, but while in the balkans I meet a lot of people that had.  Consensus seemed to be that everyone loved montenegro, most people didnt like Albania so much.  Seemed like there was a big difference in opinions about Albanians- friendliness, hospitality and such.  Probably just like anywhere, not so friendly in big cities, very hospitable in the country side.

Montenegro is great – I’ve been twice actually….

If you go, here are some places you might want to check out:

Herceg-Novi
**less touristed than Kotor, but a cool town – feels very “local” as you mostly will get tourists from Serbia and rest of Montenegro there. Very pretty location on the Bay of Kotor.

Kotor
**Gorgeous and a MUST VISIT, but you might get bored here quicker than Herceg-Novi. Amazing cafes though and just such a gorgeous setting. Google Kotor for pics.

I’ve heard great things about Cetinje as a mountain capital, as well as Ulcinj in the south by Albania. Bar is not the lovliest place in the world – in fact it’s quite odd too.

If you go – you can come via bus from either Sarajevo, Belgrade or Dubrovnik relatively easily. Flights to Belgrade will be cheaper than ones to Montenegro if you are going direct. You could also always fly to Tivat in Montenegro, sometimes Montenegro Airlines of JAT offers nice cheap flights from London…..

I had a pic of Kotor and its beautiful Boka Bay but for some reason the photo thing doesn’t work, at least on preview.
The photo isn’t all that great quality anyway, but I’ll try again later. Some call Kotor “little Dubrovnik” and I can see why, but its setting is unique.
