Hi,

In the middle(-ish) of my trip in July I’ll be going to Naples and I wanted to check out the Amalfi Coast as well. I was thinking of staying in Salerno for a night or two as it seems to be the largest town/centre in the area, but wasn’t sure of how easy it would be to go from town to town. Any advice?

The Circumvesuvius commuter rail system connects these places. I think it consists of 2 lines and there’s a train on each line about every 1/2 hour, so it’s pretty easy to get around. The station in Naples is pretty much beneath the regular train station and well signed. The fares are pretty cheap (4or 5€) but aren’t covered by a rail pass. This is not part of the Italian national rail system, so Trenitalia.com doesn’t show the schedules or sell the tickets at the regular kiosks. You can find at least some of the schedules on The German rail system web page: http://reiseauskunft…

Thanks, didn’t realise there was a train line along the coast, thought the terrain was to steep or whatever. If anyone else asks, the company has its own website, http://www.vesuviana…

What would you recommend? Is it worth staying in Salerno or somewhere along the coast, or is it doable as a day trip (or two) from Naples? Also, is Naples a good place to stay for more than a day or two? Everything I’ve heard has either been negative or glowingly positive.

I think Salerno is about an hour from Naples, so doable as a day trip. However, why do you want to stay in Naples? I’ve heard it describes as “you’ll either love it or hate it.” I think most everyone who posts here on Eurotrip is on the negative side. You could post a question in the “favorite places” forum if you want more discussion. IMO, the pizza is great, but you can get that on a day trip. Naples is a pretty edgy city with high unemployment, thus higher than normal potential for pickpockets and purse snatchers. Maybe visit Naples as a day trip from Salerno or Sorento?????

When we were in Naples (2004) you had to buy your tickets for circumvesuvius at the window in the station. It was really crowded but the line moved pretty fast. Keep your ticket throughout your trip as they sometimes check tickets when you exit

I don’t particularly desire to stay there, I’ve just never been so thought it may be worth checking out. I was thinking of staying in Rome for a few days, then Salerno for a few days while doing day trips to Naples and Amalfi, but again I wasn’t sure as I’ve only been to Italy once and that was just to Venice.

From what I could ascertain from the website the line seems to end at Sorrento coming from the northeast, whereas I was more interested in coming from the Salerno/Vietri Sul Mare direction. Are there buses that go along the coast, as in through Minori, Amalfi, Positano, etc.?
