American Breakfast
Sun, 08/29/2004 - 15:52
What is an American breakfast?
My guess is English breakfast minus 1 meat, beans, tomato. (So, eggs, toast, bacon/sausage).
I guess it’s fried eggs, omelette, ham, sausages, french frites, cornflakes. Plus it’s ususally means that there will be some choice, like smorgasbord.
If "to order" it would include at least 2 eggs (choice of fried or scrambled) and either ham, sausage or bacon plus coffee and toast. Frequently what’s billed as the "big breakfast" or "American breakfast" includes hashbrowns (pan-fried potatoes) and/or pancakes with the above — and often 3 eggs. I’d expect at least some hot dishes with anything that was called an "American" breakfast.
Many hotel chains now include breakfast in the US (fairly recent addition). Most of these include at least 1 hot dish and/or make-your-own waffles plus juice, cereals, fruit, yogurt, pastries, bagels and cream cheese, and about anything you can heat in a toaster.
