Amsterdam or Prague?!
Tue, 05/03/2005 - 12:45
Im heading out to Munich for the Oktoberfest for a week in mid sept. I’m planning on spending 3-4 days in Munich and the rest of the time in Prague or Amsterdam (3-4 days). I cant decide which one yet though and im looking for some advice/opinions.
As far as background info:
- I’m in my mid 20’s.
- Im into finding out more about the locals than doing real touristy stuff, although there are certain things you just cant pass up.
- I’m into architecure and really into history.
- I’d rather head to a bar than a heavy club to get a drink.
Thanks for any help! …and if anyone is planning on being in Munich either the sept 17th/18th or 24th/25 let me know.

carpe diem!

I’d prob. say Prague, but I liked Amsterdam as well. Prague would definitly have the bars that you speak of, the traditional pivo culture in Czech is more inline with drinking it in bars (Pivnice, or Hospody) than in Clubs. So you’ll have that going for you.
Plus, I think the "non touristy" stuff can be easily accomplished in Prague. In Amsterdam, there are a lot of "sights" to see, Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum, Heiniken Museum, Anne Frank, etc. In Prague, while there ARE sites, like the Castle, Cathedral, etc, I think what I like much more about Prague is that the entire old city (Stare Mesto) & Lesser Town (Mala Strana) districts are almost museums in their own right. Basically it almost feels like a "disneyland-esque" version of how American imagine Europe to be, which isn’t always a bad thing.
I think it’s also nice that you are going in September instead of total high season in the summer, because crowds will be thinner there.

I would also say Prague. First of all, I think it’s closer to Munich (but I’m bad at geography, so correct me if I’m wrong). Second, if money’s a concern, Prague is A LOT cheaper than Amsterdam. Both cities are touristy but have things to see off the beaten path, both have interesting history and architecture. Both have plenty of bars, but imho the ones in Prague are nicer, and anyone with some taste will tell you that Czech beer is a million times better than Dutch beer.
Or most other countries’ beer, for that matter.
Prague here as well.
I love Amsterdam, but based on what you want I would say Prague is the best place for you for many of the reasons already mentioned above.
When in Prague, if you like jazz, I recommend checking out this little (and I do mean little) jazz club—- U Maleho Glena Bar & Jazz Club.
Thanks!
I’m definitely going to try and get to the U Maleho Glena Bar & Jazz Club.
If anyone else has any other suggestions of cool places to go (besides the obvious touristy spots) please let me know.
I agree with everyone that Prague is probably the best bet for you. I haven’t been to either in a really long time, but from what I remember Prague will have more of the kind of things you’re looking for – or at least they will be easier to find because there isn’t as much overpowering of the kitchy tourist stuff.
RiceCloud…great reccomendation re: U Maleho Glena!!! That’s one of my wife & I’s favourite places in Prague. Awesome suggestion.
As far as other ones in Prague, Pivinice Radegast, just off the old town, somewhat near Marquis De Sade. Not sure if Radegast closed, heard from a friend it might have, but if it didn’t, you gotta go. Such a great traditional Czech Hodspody!

Prague……. just gorgeous… you’ll love it
I agree with going to Prague. As for suggestions, if you like rock music go to .Kure v Hodinkach (Chicken in Watch)
http://www.kurevhodi…
It is located in Zizkov – a five minute tram ride from the main city center. Great food and good music.
No brainer. Prague. Amsterdam’s disgusting!
Of course this means you’ll do nothing but drink beer the whole time.
Sounds good to me!
I’d prob. say Prague also. I’ve enever been to neither Adam or Prague, but I have friends that have been to both of them (Otis, on this message boards
, is one of them ) and they also are "into finding out more about the locals" and also out of the beaten path kind of travellers. They enjouyed Prague more.
Just my 2cents..
