Any advice for teaching in the UK?
Mon, 11/01/2004 - 20:10
Hey all,
I am looking to find out about teaching in the UK. I am a NYS Certified English Educator, for grades 7-12, have my BA in Secondary English Language Arts, and am currently working on my MA in Literacy education, grades 5-12.
I know that there is an abundance of teaching positions in the London area, however, I am looking to be somewhere smaller and less congested (you know, differnt from NY).
I am wondering about alot of things, such as:
1)Can anyone reccomend a job website they found helpful, a recruitment agency, etc
2)Can anyone offer info on nice areas to work in
3)What are Bristish schools like, I hear that many schools have students with behavorial problems, and overcrowded classes
4)Is it hard for a US citizen to get a work permit (again, I hear it is difficult)
5)Has anyone been in a similar situation and have some advice to offer?
6) Anything else?
Anything to help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance
Take care everyone
—Melissa

Hi there……….well as far as teaching goes in the Uk Im not quite sure I think the pay is ridiculous. I never taught there and Im just finishing my Bed right now. What I do recommend is going to www.gumtree.com that may give you an idea of what is out there. If you just want to go to the Uk to see the place and work there I would try looking for simple jobs. If you are a US citizen it may be difficult but give it a shot. I worked in Oxford last year just doing some simple bar work and it was sweet. Live in job as well. ……….
Cheers.
Matt
Thanks Matt,
That website is useful.
Take care
