Any questions with the new site?
Tue, 05/06/2008 - 09:20
Hey Mods,
With the new site up, do you guys have any questions about the mod functions? We should have all of the same features as before, so if you can’t figure out how to get something to work let us know and we’ll do a screencast or short tutorial.
I am leaving from New York, NY and traveling for 64 days

I haven’t really tried to do anything yet.
Does it really work pretty much the same?
A tutorial probably would help me.
Eat the food, use the wrong verbs, and get charged double.
When you reply or quote, your signature shows up pin the text box that you type in and when you post you get your signature showing twice. When I hit reply I got this text box with my signature in the first line and the curser defaulted to the end of the text.
Eat the food, use the wrong verbs, and end up getting charged double.
I don’t like that fact that you can only see the specific comment you’re replying to when you write a reply. I like to look back through other comments on the thread from the reply screen.
Also, does the “new” indicator work? In some forums I see an indication of new stuff since my last visit. In others I don’t.
All very good points. This is exactly the stuff we’re looking for in the beta phase so we can iron out all the problems and features. Will built this from scratch (unlike our last forums) so we can do almost anything we want. Keep the comments coming!! I’m going to forward all of this to Will.

Oh, and I’ll get a moderator screencast set up by tomorrow night so you guys can use all of the admin features.

We can get a screencast together for the moderation functionality.
I terms of the signature, I will have to test a bit and see what I can figure out.
I have added a ‘Post new comment’ form at the bottom of the forum topic pages, so you can reply directly on the topics page rather than having to leave the page. if you click on ‘reply’ or ‘quote’ on a specific comment then it will take you to a page with just the comment you are replying to showing.
you can quote using the quote functionality above () and you can also specify who the author was by using [ quote=author][/ quote] (take out the spaces). this will give you the following:
in terms of the ‘new’ indicator, you have found a bug. apparently it only shows a new indicator if there is a new topic in that forum. if you actually go into the forum, then you will see which topics have new comments by this icon (). i will try to find a way to update the front page of the forum to reflect new comments as well as new topics.
thanks for the feedback…

My signature is not showing up in the text field when I reply or quote. Can anyone else confirm this problem?
MB, I merged all of your old content (including your profile and profile settings) from the alpha site. I have changed the signature functionality from the alpha site, but maybe your account has not reflected that change. Can you edit your account and go to the ‘Settings’ tab and resave that page. Let me know if the problem continues…

I have updated the front page so that it will reflect ALL the new activity in each forum. The ‘new’ count is now the number of new topics + number of new comments. Once you go into a specific forum, the new topics will be denoted by and the new comments will show up in the ‘Replys’ column. If you click on the ‘# new’ here it will take you directly to the new comments…
Let me know if you have any problems, but this should take care of that problem…

So I was about to do a screencast to show you how to use all of the mod features, but realized how easy it is. . .
All you have to do is click the “edit” *tab in a topic to find the options you need including: editing a post, deleting a post, and moving it to another forum. Mods also have the ability to “Sticky” a post to the top by clicking *Publishing Options at the bottom of a new post.
Also, you now have the same privileges and permissions in each forum — not just the ones you moderate.
Questions?

Im not sure this is totally true matt. You probably do because you are an editor too, but the moderator role may not have all of the same features for forums that they are not a moderator for.
This is from memory, so I may be wrong, but I think this is how it works.
any moderator can moderate the comments on all forums (edit / delete).
i think you have to be a moderator of a specific forum to be able to access the ‘edit’ tab for a topic. this means that only moderators of a specific forum can, move, sticky and edit/delete the topic its self.

Ah, my mistake then.
