Anyone addited to the TV show: Passport to Europe?
Sun, 05/15/2005 - 12:32
It comes on the travel channel Mondays-Fridays at noon and then at 3PM eastern. Samantha Brown hosts it, and every episode is a refreshing look at each city.
I’m addicted to this show!

Yea, me too, but its on at 12:30 my time so I can never watch it. Only Monday and Wednesday cause I go to school and have a break at that time. Its always fun to wonder where she will be going for that day’s show… This should be in the other discussion about movies that make you wanna travel, cause it always inspires me for my trip!!
Tiff
p.s. just wish she wouldnt spend so much time telling us about her 500 euro/night hotel rooms!!!
I agree on the room thing, but I love her personality!
…I’m such a nerd that I check out the schedule.

I love that show!!
I love Samantha Brown!
this shows amazing…i wish more of travel channel was like this but they dont dont concentrate on travelling out of america so much
Yeah, I know, the Travel Channel always has shows about Poker and really weird unrelated stuff. Sometimes there are good shows about interesting US cities/towns but usually they are geared toward retirement-aged people or families.
Discovery channel used to have a couple of great travel shows where the hosts would actually get involved in the local culture/rituals. Most shows that are on now are just narrative commentary.
Happy Travels everyone!
I’m obsessed with Samantha Brown. I used to watch Great Hotels all the time and was thrilled about Passport to Europe. I have to say that the hotels are way out of my price range, but it’s nice to dream. You know what else is a great show? The Thirsty Traveler. I think it’s on the Fine Living Network.
funkyj, I used to watch those travel shows on Discovery. They were really good. I also love Globetrekker on PBS. I also remember once watching a documentary on PBS on Taiwan-Chinese culture. Fascinating. Rick Steeves is okay. He seems more interested in bed-and-breakfasts than actual sightseeing. Wild On is dumb.
Passport to Europe is probably the only good show on the Travel Channel. I was so excited when I got the Travel Channel on cable. I thought I’d be watching things on China. Imagine, then, my dismay when I saw stupid "Vacation Home Search" and the dumbass poker games. WTF?
But yeah, Passport to Europe is a really good show, judging on an episode I saw on Spain. The host is really good too. Unfortunately, I’m never able to catch it. The times I’m at home, the Travel Channel only shows poker.

Perhaps we should petition them to design a show with younger travelers in mind?
I don’t like the hostess… she strikes me as a really bland American everywoman. I saw a segment on her trip to Berlin and she was easily freaked out by all the "edginess" and "weirdness" of everything. Maybe she’ll grow on you though!
Hey everyone,
luv_the_beach, I totally know what you mean and agree. I feel like the poker shows are on ALL the time. To me, a travel channel should showcase ONLY things to do with travel.
I have this whole theory about cable channels. This holds true for all the discovery, learning, history, travel, and animal channels: it seems that when they first were introduced they were filled with shows that were informative and interesting, and they rarely repeated anything. They sucked you in and then, they decided to put all the repetitive crap on and show only military shows, home shows, makeover shows, and alot of bull&*%t shows to fill in the spaces just so they can create more channels that you had to pay extra for to get the programs you once loved.
I swear it is a consipracy!
Well, let’s hope the travel channel gets it together and continues to show Passport and other "travel" shows.
Ok, enough rambling here. Happy travels everyone.
Same here. We had TC on our local cable about 10 years ago, and it was very good back then. They took it off for whatever reason, and brought it back about 3 years ago, and now it’s mostly crap! World’s Best Hotel Bathrooms? Give me a break.
And as someone else responded when I posted my excitement that I was getting TC a few years ago, it’s become a 24 hour infomercial for Vegas.
How do we catch that show on TV here in Canada???
Yeah funkyj, I remember when Discovery Channel used to have things on wildlife (awesome), natural disasters, engineering, all sorts of cool things. I don’t like what they have now. I’m not a fan of Biker Build-off
or whatever they call that showand all the other reality crap, just as you mentioned.Animal Planet is another joke. Instead of African or North American wildlife (like wolves, deer, elk, lions, elephants, zebras, bears, etc, in the wild), they show dog shows, pet contests, and all sorts of crap.
Dominus,
I thought that Discovery and affiliated channels (TLC, Travel Channel, Animal Planet) also broadcasted in Canada. I’m not sure how the system works in Canada, it’s probably similar to the US where private cable companies have divided up the country into zones where each has a monopoly on providing non-airwave channels (although, now there’s competition with satellite TV providers). All cable providers carry certain "basic" channels (like CNN, MTV), but there are some channels that are not universally provided.
