Arabic translation of your passport
Tue, 03/25/2008 - 06:45
Just before embarking on a trip to London and then to Libya, I was told by the Libyan authorities to have a transcription of my passport in Arabic for Libya.
Has anyone done their assport translation or transcription in Arabic ? Have you done it with the Passport office in the US or through a private agency? Is it possible to do with it at any other Govt agency?
Please advice,
I am leaving from US and traveling for 11 days
London, Brussels, Basel, Paris, London
London, Brussels, Basel, Paris, London
I have not had to do this myself but I hear that it is fairly typical in Arabic speaking countries, what I have heard of being done was not getting a official US government translation, but get a commercial company to make a transliteration into Arabic text, ….and I don’t think they are still in customs detention.
Good luck and let us know what you find out.
I spoke to George from the US dept of State for North African countries and he was taken by surprise on this request.
However, he had asked me to fly to Tunis to the US Embassy and get it done there.
i have contacted the US Embassy and they would have someone do it for me. They were fully aware of the new rules and possibly have a third party do it for me.
I also contacted the Libyan Embassy in Washington DC and they have also provided me 2 third party telephone numbers to call. However the US dept advised me not to send my passport to anyone.
I have decided to go to Tunis now.
