Are electronic translators worth it?

One time that I traveled to Europe I brought an electronic translator. It seemed like it would be great. You just typed in what you wanted to say and hit the language that you wanted it translated to and it printed it on the screen and also said it (out loud). However, after it went through the x-ray machine at the airport, it never worked again. I never again brought one.

Has anyone used one of these things? If so, How did it work for you? Would you recommend it? What brand did you use? Price?
