I’ve read about how many of the mediterenean nations such as Italy and Spain take their vacations in august. Is this really as bad as some people make it out to be? We are trying to plan around this by leaving a little ealier, probably go through there from Jul 20th – Aug 5th. Will this help or are we restricting our trip for no reason?

Is your concern that there will be too many or too little people? 
 
July/August is the busiest time throughout Europe, some people are turned off by throngs of tourists everywhere, others enjoy it.

Yea we’re travelling the mediteranean coast around late july, so Im wondering if there really is much difference between late july vs middle of august (to avoid the mass of people).

Not only do Southern Europeans go on vacation, but Northern Europeans also go on vacation to Southern Europe by the millions.

That said, not all places will be overwhelming.  Most are manageable, actually.

For the most part, there isn’t much of a difference between late July and August.

You’ll be fine.  I’ve been to the region countless times in July and August.
 
Do you have any specific places in mind?
