August Trip to Budapest
Sun, 06/22/2014 - 08:20
My wife and I, and another couple will be flying into Budapest in August. We will travel from Budapest to Vienna, and then fly home from Dresden, Germany. We will be using the rail system to travel from place to place while there. We are looking for the cheapest way to buy tickets. Someone had suggested using SparSchiene tickets. They had never used them, but had heard they are less than half the regular price of train tickets. Can anyone help us find the cheapest way to buy tickets? All of us would qualify for senior rates. Thanks Rick
This thread at Trip Advisor may help. Looks like you can buy them from the Austrian rail website (shamrock logo on the schedule?) Looks like maybe you can use them in Hungary, too as the Hungarian rail website seems to mention them too. I did not try to translate from the Hungarian. Buying soon after they go on sale (probably 60 days before departure) is a good idea as there appear to be limited seats and August is the busiest time of year.

Don’t know if they work in Germany, but there are a number of cheap ticket options for your tickets in Germany (sometimes a single ticket good for up to 5 people) which you can learn about with some searching on Bahn.de
Thanks for the tips. I will do some research on them.
Good luck with your family trip rick pullen. Don’t forget to share with us about it. I am planning for my own, your story would do some help.
