Avoiding Oktoberfest
Sat, 01/05/2008 - 20:14
I’m passing through southern Germany in early October and would like to spend a couple of days in Munich but I have discovered that I will be there during Oktoberfest. I don’t drink and have no interest in going to the festival. I am wondering how busy the rest of the city will be during the festival, or is most of the activity concentrated around the Theresienwiese where the festival is held?

I suggest looking at old posts on our “Oktoberfest” forum for information on what it’s like and how it impacts the area as well as some helpful links. It looks like you could have trouble finding a reasonably priced place to stay: http://eurotrip.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=122326
Sunskin and Luvbeers are our resident experts on Oktoberfest and they don’t post a lot except in the Oktoberfest forum.
You could look at staying in Salzburg or Innsbruk (both are less than 2 hours away by train) and visiting Munich on day trips — but I’d be sure to have any needed train reservations well in advance.
I feel like we should have a sunskin symbol for oktoberfest questions — like batman.

The Fest ends each year the FIRST SUNDAY im Oktober. That in mind; the heavy volume of people traffic, higher accomodation prices, and over-loaded trains is pretty much over 48 hrs after that. So, you are looking at little trouble with the Fest atmosphere usually one week into Oct.
