Backpack choice for DSLR and packing questions
Mon, 04/27/2009 - 23:48
Looking for a cheap backpack to travel with in Europe for 3 weeks.
Will be doing a lot of train travel and would like to be able to carry-on my backpack on the plane.
I also have a Nikon DSLR with 2 lenses I would like to take and I want to make sure it’s safe and I would love a bag with a day backpack that zips off for day trips but I don’t know if thats even possible…
Anyone have a good bag that they really liked? I know there a lot of experienced travelers here so I was hoping someone could help. Thank so much
I am leaving from New York with $2000 for 21 days

I also took my camera (and a tripod) when I did my trip. My backpack was a 33L North Face climbing bag. It is probably not what others would recommend. It is quite small, but I pack really light.
I took my normal camera bag because it has belt loops. I used the waist strap of my backpack to attach my camera bag on my front. This actually worked very well because there was a little pouch in it for my passport and tickets and such when I was traveling, so I never had to take off my bag. It was also really nice because the camera was very accessible if I was walking and saw something I wanted to shoot.
What lenses are you planning on taking?

Hi There,
I’m going on a similar trip as the first poster’s and was wondering – could you link to the backpack you have? I couldn’t find it on the internet. It might just be too late for me to function well
. Also you found you were able to use it as a carry on?
Thanks!
I’m also very curious. I was planning on taking the Lowepro Flipside 200 with me (back facing zipper would be good protection against theft) as a daypack and then just traveling with that inside a 40L or so backpack. Any other suggestions?
As far as lenses I have the standard 18-55 and 55-200 vr af nikon lenses that came with my d60. I just can’t see not wanting to have the zoom available to me, but I was thinking about maybe buying the 18-200 lens so I don’t have to worry about switching lenses and packing more….

@lethe5: the camera bag i took was just a baseline lowepro. i used the belt loops and put the bag on the waist straps for my 33L pack (which i cant seem to find online anywhere).
@stingray072: i though i was going to want a lot of reach when i was traveling, but didnt. i took a 28-210mm lens (usually my favorite lens) and i hardly ever used it. i ended up using more wide angle stuff because i found that i was more interested in the scene than specific details. i still used the 28-210mm a bunch, but i almost always had my 50mm f:1.7 or my 24mm f:2.0 lenses on my camera. i took a tripod, but that may be overkill. i have image stabilization in my camera, so i was able to freehand a lot of my night shots with my primes. make sure to read lots of review for the 18-200 lens before you buy it because a lot of the super-zoom lenses have some image quality issues due to the actual physics of the lens.
