backpack or suitcase
Thu, 05/11/2006 - 23:01
Hello,
I have never been to Europe before and need some advice. I am going to be traveling around Europe via the eurorail trains for 2 and a half weeks and then ending up in Prague where i will be staying for 6 weeks. What kind of luggage would be best to take? My friends are only take a backpack but i feel that i will need to take a rolling suitcase. Any idea?
Thanks

I’d take a backpack. I think it’s much easier to carry in general, and if you’re packing stuff for a six week stay in Prague you’re probably taking more than the bare essentials you would for a backpacking trip. I remember being in Granada a few years ago and these two girls were trying to get on the bus with their big suitcases, having a hell of a time lugging them up the steps onto the bus, and generally pissing off everyone on the bus because they were taking forever to get on. The weight would have been easier to manage on their backs. See this thread for other opinions on this topic:

A backpack definitely. 6 and a half weeks isnt that long…so you’ll be able to pack more than enough in a decent sized backpack. It’s just more portable…you never know where the hell you’re going to have to walk…and for how long…and rolling a thing up and down steps..or uneven pathways/roads….it’ll be a bitch. I remember on my trip..I’d have moments where I thought "thank god I never brought a suitcase…it would have made this a lot harder."
I agree with the former posts. Backpack is definitely the way to go. However, I think a really good compromise is one of those bags they’re making now with both wheels and shoulderstraps. I really enjoy having my roller when I’m in the right area, but on trains something that can be as versatile as possible is the best. If you do take a roller, DON’T take a big one— just a little carry-on size. Occasionally I travel with my little roller and a basic rucksack (when I need to take more stuff).
By the way, if you’re looking for some tips on packing light, try my blog (I just put up an article about it!) at www.rentvillas.blogs….
Hope you have fun!
