Any hints on securing a backpack and preventing damage to straps etc… on flights?

Zips, clips and pockets seem very tempting for quick theft. Straps and buckles are candidates for damage on conveyors etc…
What spring to mind is some form of bag like those used for the post – one opening with a lockable strap.
