I am travelling to thailand in 3 weeks and was wondering if anyone could recommend a good cheap hotel or hostel in Bangkok. And what is the best area in Bangkok to stay in?
Cheers,

You dont need a hostel when you can get a room for 6 Ozzie dollars. If you really want to be cheap, then you can find dorms, but the backpacker in Thailand is very dirty and more feral than his European counterparts.

There are tons of places to stay, I always stay at the Khaosan Palace on the KSR as it is clean and they never bother me since Ive been coming there for three years.

BKK rules.

If you want to stay in the backpacker bit, then it is the KSR area. If not, there are lots of cool places all over.

I love Bangkok!

If you don’t want to stay in Backpacker Central, aka Khao San Road, I recommend Suk 11 in Sukhumvit. Nice dorms and nice private rooms. clean, family run place. Mama makes dinner every night if you don’t want to go out. Very convenient to the subway and airport bus. I’ll stay there again next visit. BTW, Sukhumvit is convenient and near lots of shopping.

Yeah Sukhumvit was what I was thinking about, but couldnt fathom how to spell it.The Siam Square area is quite nice as well, especially if you are into shopping and want the convenience of the subway and sky train.

Also, I recommend using metre taxis until you know how much prices should be for the distance you want to go. The tuk tuk drivers will always try to over charge you (often in very charming ways – I can;t hate on them)
