Hi folks,

I am a complete newbie.  So here are my plans.  I am planning on spending about 14 days in Europe.  I plan on landing in Barcelona from Los Angeles.  Spend a night or two in Barcelona and then go to Switzerland for some snowboarding.  Then Amsterdam for some partying nights and maybe hang out in Paris if I have time, before I fly out from Barcelona again.

What is my best means of travel?  Euro rail? Bus? Ryain Air? For instance, is it cheaper to buy a eurorail pass before I land in Europe?  Also, it looks like Ryan Air is cheap, but how do I get to their particular airports?  I will be travelling by myself, so I have no idea how to get around.  My main concern is trying to get from Barcelona to Switzerland, I dont see many options to go about that route.  Any help is much appreciated.

I think a rail pass would likely be a waste of money and time in this case. With only 14 days to cover this much ground, I think you’ll have to fly from BCN to Switzerland, from Switzerland to AMS, then take train from AMS to PAR, train or fly from PAR to BCN… so that’s basically 2 train tickets. Run it through www.railsaver.com to see if a pass covering NL, FR, ES is cheaper (those Thalys tickets on the AMS-PAR line can be pricey—like €90 one-way if you can’t get a student discount or something). If the Thalys tix are killer, then a pass might be slightly cheaper in this case… but check and see. Check www.whichbudget.com for the flights.

Did you already buy the roundtrip ticket to Barcelona? Flying open jaw will definitely save you time and probably money. If you are a student definitely look for a student airfare on www.studentuniverse….. (and statravel.com) i found some good prices for student fares for Barcelona and Amsterdam since I was considering doing something similar!
