Beginning Trip Itinerary
Mon, 12/31/2007 - 00:24
Hey everyone-
I’m new to the forum, but am planning on taking my first trip to Europe in late June. We have a beginning itinerary shell for the trip (29 days), and I was wondering what you all thought.
The trip:
Fly in to London
London to Amsterdam
Amsterdam to Berlin
Berlin to Munich
Munich to Rome
Rome to Zurich
Zurich to Paris
Pris to London
We may decide to change cities, and, as it stands, we should have 2-3 days in every location. What do you all think? Any suggestions?

[ol][*]London 2-4 days, possible day trip(s) to points of interest in southern England
[*]Amsterdam 2 days
[*]Cologne 1-2 days
[*]Berlin 1-2 days
[*]Munich 1-3 days, possible day-trips to Neuschwanstein or Bad Tölz
[*]Valais/Wallis or Ticino cantons 2-3 days
[*]Florence 2-4 days, day-trip(s) to Cinque Terre, Siena, Lucca, and/or San Gimignano
[*]Paris 3-5 days, day-trip(s) to Bretagne/Normandie and/or Champagne region
[*]London[/ol]

Thanks for the input! Like I said, it’s just a starting point.
I was wondering why you left out Rome though. Even if we stayed the max amount in each city you suggested, we would still have an extra few days.
Do you think Rome would just be too far out the way?
Oh, I didn’t realize that. Yeah, you can definitely include Rome.
No, it’s not out of the way. There’s frequent and fast train service between Rome and Florence.
Let me revise it (I wrote it in a hurry, I just realized you have quite a bit space to add more)
[ol][*]London 2-4 days, possible day trip(s) to points of interest in southern England
[*]Amsterdam 2 days
[*]Cologne and/or Middle Rhine Valley 2-3 days
[*]Berlin 1-2 days (or you can leave out Berlin)
[*]Munich 1-3 days, possible day-trips to Neuschwanstein and/or Bad Tölz
[*]Valais/Wallis or Ticino cantons 2-3 days
[*]Florence 2-3 days, day-trip(s) to Cinque Terre, Siena, Lucca, and/or San Gimignano
[*]Rome 2-3 days
[*]Côte d’Azur 2-4 days, or Arles and/or Nîmes 1-3 days
[*]Paris 2-5 days, possible day-trip(s) to Bretagne/Normandie and/or Champagne region
[*]London[/ol]

Thanks again for the input. I think we’re heavily considering the itinerary you are siggesting, but we would swap Copenhagen for Cologne. Do you think this would be a bad idea?
Also, it seems like this trip would flow very well with train rides and rail passes. It seems like it should be a lot of fun!
If you want to visit Copenhagen/Denmark, that’s entirely your decision, but it’s a bit out of the way from your current itinerary, so you’d have to rework the itinerary, in order to include Copenhagen. This can definitely be done if you want to, just be aware that you’ll have to compromise some other destinations. I suggested Cologne (and the nearby Middle Rhine Valley) because it’s a good place to break up the commute from Amsterdam to Berlin; the region features prominently in German history, and is worth a look. It also helps balance your itinerary in Germany.
You can still skip Cologne/Rhine in favor of Copenhagen; I don’t think you’d be doing Germany too much injustice. But: if you’re up for it, I don’t see why you can’t skip Berlin instead (but then commute from Copenhagen to Munich would be long), or you can trim some days here and there, and therefore be able both to keep Cologne and allocate time for Copenhagen. These are all possible options.
It will. [

just to throw my two cents into the pot, from my experiences in Italy (Florence, Cinque Terre, Rome, etc) i would definitely spend the lighter side of your trip in rome and give more time to Florence which for the cultural and historical aspects of Italy was far more interesting than Rome to me, and in Cinque Terre you will get something completely different but a place that is definitely not to be missed, i hope you have fun it sounds like a great trip!
