Best gelato
Sun, 04/19/2009 - 20:07
Any recommendations for the best places to get gelato in Italy?
This place, in Florence, is the most famous. We had it, and it was good. But that was 10 years ago.
Vivolie
But we also had some really good green apple gelato in Venice, not all that far from the San Marco. This was about 6 years ago. I have not been there, but I’ve also heard good things about the gelateria Alaska in Venice.
The rule of thumb I’ve heard is that if the gelato containers are plastic—walk out, because the gelato came from some central processing center. If the gelato tubs are stainless steel, the gelato was freshly made at the gelateria.
I went to Vivoli last fall (about 10 times
) and it is still amazing…
Vivoli has the reputation of best gelato in Florence, but you will find gelato on every corner almost.

Gelato is like sex…even when it’s bad it’s still better than most other things.

I’ve heard two versions of another rule of thumb — if the banana/pistachio is bright yellow/green, leave. Real banana should be gray and real pistachio drab olive green.
I agree.
Glad to hear about Vivoli, too.
By far the best place is in Vernazza, Cinque Terre.
GelateriaVernazza.com As you walk from the train station towards the water, it will be on your right side with plants on either side of the door as it shows in the web site. The sign reads “Gelateria Artiginale” All hand made with fresh milk, fresh fruit! AMAZING!
OH WOW I HAVE TO HIT UP THESE PLACES WHEN IM IN ITALY!! BTW HOW MUCH DOES GELTO COST, OR WHATS THE AVERAGE COST??
THANKS

I think that rome had the best gelato. not too expensive either, but rich and creamy && lots of flavors
Helsinki, Tallinn, Vienna, Prague, Amsterdam, Luxembourg, Munich, Barcelona, Ibiza Town, Rome, Athens, Mýkonos
the best thing is to try the gelato in all places-we had great gelato in rome, venice, treviso and yes the same place mentioned above in vernazza (allthough I think it is on the LEFT as you walk towards the water) the town is so small you can’t miss it
Barcelona, Dubrovnik, Vienna, Nice, Barcelona
awesome i cant wait to go to italy!
