Best place to stay in Europe

hi, me and my friend are planning to backpack around Europe next year and eventually stay at one place and get a place and work for a while… where would you guys recommend staying? not just a place that is a good time for a few nights but a place you think would be the best of both. thanks 
I just got back from a backpacking trip yesterday. I would recommend Barcelona. The atmosphere was nice. It was fun during the day and at night. It was cheap and the people seemed friendly.
