best places in germany..
Sat, 11/13/2004 - 09:03
hey…anyone got any ideas on the best places to visit in germany..only can visit 3 max…so in your opinion which are best three to visit….thanks
It totally depends on your interests, but my personal top 3 would be:
1. Berlin
2. Leipzig
3. Regensburg
what do u think about hamburg, and munich
I haven’t been to Hamburg, Munich is nice but nothing special imho.
Really? It’s one of my favorite places in the world.
Berlin! I LOVE Berlin… one of my favorite cities in Europe.
that’s why i said "imho" – I knew others would disagree
I spent a long weekend in beautiful Cologne last weekend. It really does offer something something for everyone, beautiful walks along the Rhine, leafy parks, modern art, museums, architecture and plenty of Kolsch!
I loved it and highly reccommend it…it was beautiful.
We stayed in the Station Hostel on Marzellenstrasse…very central, 5 minutes from the Dom and the Hauptbahnhof (main train station).
Hope this helps!
Cologne would have been my number 4.
1. BERLIN!!!
2. Munich
3. Cologne
Munich, Cologne and Lubeck for me
How’s the nightlife in berlin? Are Girls friendly, laid back, easy? How is the party scene there? clubs, bars? I am planning to be there christmas day (25th and 26th), will there be lot of things going on nightlife wise?
If you ask me to choose a top 3 for sites in Germany, it would be difficult but I if forced, I would say: Berlin, Dresden, and some place on the Rhine River like St. Goar or Koblenz. But, if you are looking for night life and party scenes. I would change it to: Berlin, Stuttgart, and probably Munich.
Munich.
Haven’t been to Berlin yet, but I think it would make my list if I had.
I was suprised at how much I liked Nuremberg.
Personally I prefer Rothenberg. It is a Medeival walled city that has incredible character. If you are going before Christmas you might enjoy the Kathe Wolfart Christmas Store there.
I agree with what others have said…
I really enjoyed Berlin, Munich and Cologne.
I think all of those cities have a fair share of history AND nightlife. I also thought Freiburg was gorgeous, but better during the spring time.
WHich of these towns will have the most WWII history? I would really like to go to an old concentration camp during my time in Germany, but don’t know if I will be able to go to more than two cities while in Germany. Also, does anyone have a clue on how much it may cost if I were to purchase a train ticket to auschwitz? I am pretty sure that it would not be covered in my rail pass…
Auschwitz is in Poland…to be honest I dont think that you would have enough time to visit, its an emotional, tiring day…and you need a whole day at the museums to take it all in.
It was hard enough travelling the short hour or so back to Krakow after I visited…let alone travelling as far back as Germany!
Save it for another trip imho.
Cologne was all but destroyed during WWII and was rebuilt afterwards.
to jomegz…..I find that WWII history can be "felt" in Berlin and Dresden. I have been to both a couple of times and just get a real feel for the history. There are many other places that I saw in the old East Germany especially, and one other that comes to mind is Torgau, the ‘official’ location of where the Americans and Russians finally met along the Elbe River in ’45. If you take some tours however, you’ll find out that Torgau was only a photo-op and the real 1st meeting was actually not in Torgau(I forgot where it was).
I also agree with Kentish Girl…..Freiburg has a lot of charm!! Also, some really nice small lakes in the area are a short train ride out of town!!
I agree with anh80, Berlin is probably the best place to visit for WW2 history. They have a lot of museaums and don’t they also have the holocaust memorial in Berlin now as well? Or is that still being built? Plus you can also get a lot of the postwar history.
As for concentration camps in Germany, I visited a few. I haven’t been to Auschwitz in Poland, but in Germany there isn’t much left at the concentration camps any more if I remember correctly. I think that after the war most were destroyed, so now most places have memorials and a museum, but nothing like Auschwitz or a holocaust museum. Germany has a lot of holocaust exhibitions that go through out the country so you should probably check with tourist information when you arrive.
I think you can add Poland to your Eurorail pass at an additional charge. But I agree…Auschwitz would definitely cut a day out of your trip…
Hard to say my 3 favorite places, because I like that whole country so much…how ‘bout:
1) Berlin
2) Munich
3) Nuremberg
Hamburg is farther down the list. The "downtown" area is nice (it overlooks two beautiful lakes) and you can get yourself into all sorts of trouble in the Reeperbahn (Red Light District), but I wouldn’t go out of my way to see it unless you’re already in the area, for example going from Amsterdam to Berlin or coming to/from Copenhagen.
Rothenburg is very touristy, but it is a pretty city. I’ve heard that it’s wonderful at night when all the tourists are gone.
1. Munchen
2. Garmisch-Parten.
3. Regensburg
4. Oberammagau
5. Berlin
6. Black Forest
7. Rhine River Cruise
8. Dachau
