Instead of spending most of my time visiting the familiar Western countries, I want to be a little more adventurous and check out Montenegro, and perhaps Greece.

Looking at rail pass prices…I can get a 4 country pass for Greece, Montenegro/Serbia/Bulgaria, Italy, and France for abut 290 Euro or a 5 country pass that includes Benelux for 320 Euro. That would be 8 days in 2 months.

I THINK that’s definitely the best buy, though I honestly don’t know where I can find the best rates on normal train tickets (raileurope seems inaccurate, as it gives me the so-called “best” eurostar prices, but they are higher than what is listed on eurostar.com, for instance). I figure I should be able to get some good mileage out of the 8 day plan, as I’d be combining most of these places into individual trips. IE. I’ll leave Brussels one week for Montenegro and Greece, staying some days in each place, and then returning home. That would be 3 days.  If I have a long weekend I’ll hopefully be able to combine France and Italy into a single trip as well…

I’m getting somewhat off-topic though. I’m posting because I’m curious if anyone’s got suggestions on the cheapest routes and the best sites to use for train travel.

Probably NOT a good deal.  Prices in Bulgaria and former Yugoslavia will be dirt cheap.  Buy point to point tickets there.  Use a railpass in France and Benelux.  Whether or not to use a railpass in Italy is usually a toss-up — and I think it’s easier not to have a railpass since so many Italian trains require reservations.

Prices listed for point to point tickets on raileurope.com are what they charge for the tickets — usually about 35% more than the tickets cost in Europe.  By the time you add shipping and extra handling fees for trips that include reservations the cost will be twice the price.

It looks like your trip is a combination of North/Central Europe and the Balkins/Adriatic.  Have you looked for cheap flights?.  You’ll want to use the train in Italy, France and Benelux, but flying to Montenegro or Greece may be significantly cheaper and days faster than taking the train.

A France-Benelux pass makes sense…

Where can I find non-American sites for trains, so I can see European rates?
