After reading the culture section in Eyewitness Books’ introductory chapter on the Greek mainland, I realized that despite the priceles information that guidebooks may give you on places to stay, eat, and local transportation, a lot about what they write on the local culture is highly inaccurate. I noticed that a lot of the "culture" sections are either outdated, or the author misinterpreted the local culture and tried to analyze it. Beware of the culture sections in books and take what you read with a grrain of salt. These authors often times have no expertise in the culture in which they were assigned to write about, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they took their information from other books, older books. Cultures change as decades go by; look at American and British culture. The same holds true for continental countries. Take what you read with a grain of salt. I have come across a lot of inaccurate information about local cultures and customs in the guidebooks. I used to think highly of Eyewitness Books for its illustrations and wide coverage of areas. In my opinion, it’s still an excellent guidebok in this regard, but no guidebook offers 100% correct information, especially when it comes to more ambiguous topics such as culture.
