Bilingual person (me) going to Finland
Sun, 12/21/2008 - 23:59
I am a bilingual, well I guess you could say trilingual because I speak some Spanish, but I am fluent in English and Portuguese and I want to go to Finland to find work, to be quite frank I wish to live there for some time and see how life is, can anyone help me?
I was looking up a trip to there but it costs well over $2,000 and that is a lot for only 30 days of vacationing. I will be going to University to study computer science (if that helps).
I must be of some use there somewhere, can anyone help ???
I wish to work and live in Finland!

While Finland has some guest workers, the population is over 95% Finnish citizens and over 90% of the population is ethnically either Finnish or Swedish. I’m not sure it’s the best bet for finding a job. However, almost everyone speaks English, so not speaking either Finnish or Swedish wouldn’t be the huge handicap in Finland that not speaking the local language would be in other countries.
I think Nokia (the cell phone company) is one of the biggest non-government employers, so that’s where I’d start looking. You’ll probably need a job offer before you can get a work visa.
Lots of people in Europe are bilingual, and lots are even trilingual. It’s not as rare in Europe is it is in, say, the United States. And you won’t have any need for Portuguese in Finland, anyways. Have you considered Portugal?
On a side note: do you speak Brazilian Portuguese or European (Portugal) Portuguese? The difference between BP and EP is greater than the difference between American English and British English. If you’re not a native Portuguese speaker, you may find a difficult transition from one to the other.

Harry Potter,
Pretty much the same advice that applied to everyone else: do you think you have a skill that is in demand in Sweden and Finland? No one here can help you find a job, but we can give you advice on what to expect, and how to try looking for a job.
