Hi everyone,

I would really appreciate some help getting form Bordeaux, France to San Sebastian, Spain on Friday July 2, 2010.

I looked around and I can only find connecting trains through Irun for over $70 US. I was hoping a 2 hour ride would be much cheaper.

Your help would be much appreciated.

I am leaving from Detroit with $6000 for 39 days
London, Amsterdam, Paris, San Sebastián de los Reyes, Pamplona, Barcelona, Lisbon, Rome, Athens, Mýkonos, Santorini, Íos, Athens, Munich, Berlin, London
Requesting help with Transport, Hostels, Budget, Itinerary, Nightlife, Sights

Where did you find that $70 price? I couldn’t get the French rail site to come up with the full trip, but found Bordeaux to Irun for about 20 euros, and Irun to San Sebastian is about 10 euros on the Spanish rail site.

Raileurope’s prices are inflated and will cost a lot more than what you’ll pay in Europe and you’ll also pay shipping on orders under several hundred dollars. Read below and see if online booking process and picking up your ticket in France is worth the savings to you.

The direct Bordeaux-Irun train that leaves at 13:18 is 34 euros (a train with a change is slightly cheaper). You can book that one here:
http://www.voyages-s…
I don’t think you can print this ticket out at home, so you’ll have to pick it up in France. Do not choose the option to retrieve your ticket from an automated kiosk because they are set up for European credit cards with smart chips. Choose the option to pick it up at the window.

Irun to San Sebastian can be booked here:
http://www.renfe.es
If you want to purchase in English do not switch languages on the first page. Put in your cities and date, and choose “Ida” for a one-way ticket. When a new tab opens, switch to English on the new tab (you may have to reenter your data, but it will work out).

Travel agents sell tickets at “global fare” which is 30 to 35% more than the “standard fare” you’d pay at the train station, or on-line from the national rail company sites.

Thank you very much for the plan. I will look into it. So far it looks a bit higher than your quoted price.

Thank you very much for the tip. Something I will have to consider then. Perhaps I will buy more tickets while there rather than worrying about doing it from home.

Looks like a good idea for Bordeaux to San Sebastian since it doesn’t look like there are deep discounts for advance purchases and you’d end up standing in line to pick up your ticket anyway. I assume you’re going to Pamplona after San Sebastian; where are you going after Pamplona? Definitely look into booking that ticket online because a) trains in/out of Pamplona (and on major routes in Spain in summer) fill up quickly, and b) there might be really good discounts for booking in advance online. It looks like you can only book the first few days of July right now, but the second week should open soon.
