Has anyone ventured to Brazil?  It’s always been one of the places I would like to visit but the things I hear about are so mixed.  The major downside people have with Brazil is the level of crime there.  A well traveled Canadian I met in Europe had the look of death on his face when I asked if Brazil had been one of his stops on a trip he took to South America.  His reply was “God, no!”.  He then said violent crime was on the rise there and areas that were once safe for tourists have become more dangerous with criminal types beginning to target tourists.  Then again a person I met that actually went to Brazil had a great time.  Then again, however, a guy I know that was born in Brazil said he wouldn’t go there unless he was visiting family.

So, EuroTrippers I’d like to offer a penny for your thoughts on Brazil.

Hey Yojimbo! I’m brazilian, so I can help you with your trip. Visit Brazil is definitely worth (best country of South America for sure)! The great problem is that every tourist always go to Rio de Janeiro, and… yes, Rio is probably the worst Brazilian City in crime levels (and isn’t in my top10 places of Brazil either, there are better beaches… the major attraction there is the panoramic view in my opinion).

Better beaches:
Natal (Rio Grande do Norte estate, RN):

Porto de Galinhas (Pernambuco):

Abrolhos (Bahia):

MANY others (feel free to contact me to talk about brazilian beaches)

Another better brazilian places to visit (naturals):

Fernando de Noronha (a northern island, beautiful and a great place to dive):

Bonito (located at Mato Grosso do Sul state, MS):

Chapada Diamantina (Bahia):

Iguazu Falls ( the greatest falls of the world, Paraná state)

Pantanal (Mato Grosso do Sul):

Lençois Maranhenses (Maranhão)

Amazon Forest (just google it…)

If you like historic places:
Ouro Preto – MG

If you like architecture:
Brasília – DF

If you want to party on carnival (REPEATING: Don’t go to Rio):

I visited a friend in Rio a couple years ago. It was so gorgeous I couldn’t believe it. We also passed through Salvador, which was pretty, and hiked in Chapada Diamontina (mentioned above), which was amazing. My opinion is biased because my friend was working there and spoke the language pretty comfortably, but even when I ventured out alone I usually felt fine. If you can use some street sense, you should be able to enjoy yourself there.

Thanks for all of the info, scaramussa. If/when I can raise the funds for a decent trip I will put some thought into Brazil. Rio gets the tourism because it’s the place everyone knows. Locals always have a different opinion on the major destinations. My friend knows a girl from Belo Horizonte (sp?) which is also nice from what I hear. Thanks again for the valuable insight.
