I’m heading down to Rio in May to visit a friend. Lucky me. I will be in Brazil for about 2 weeks and I’d like to spend about half the time in Rio and half the time in ‘the country’. I might be interested in visiting Iguazu or the Pantanal but would love to get feedback from anyone who has been. I think a trip to the Amazon would be lovely but out of my price range…

In case you decide you decide to go to Iguazu, the best way to go is by plane, but even then, you should reserve in advance. Most of the flights are Rio – Sao Paulo – Curitiba – Foz do Iguazu, with a stop in Sao Paulo.
You may stay 3 full days to enjoy the 2 sides of the waterfalls with no hurries. It can be done in 2 days.
Another option is going to Minas Gerais (Ouro Preto, Tiradentes), and also the Green Coast of Rio (Parati, Ilha Grande). That is much closer to Rio and maybe your friend can go with you.
Just Google the cities I mentioned.
Anything you decide, you’ll enjoy it.
