If you are going to Brugge, make sure you visit the free archaeological site and display in the basement of the Holiday Inn Crown Plaza. Inside is the remains of a 10th century cathedral excavated before the hotel was built over the top. Ask the reception desk before you go in as there may be a conference going on. The entrance is via steps down past the reception desk. there are several display cases of excavated items and some tombs have 1000-year old paintings that are still intact. In the square in front of the hotel, the outline of the cathedral has been laid out in flagstones along with a stone model.
