I’m having trouble finding public transportation from Brugge to La Roche en Ardennes, a small village near Bastogne. They keep trying to route me to La Roche, which is another town.

The closest I can find is from Brugge to Bastogne, but I can’t find service from Bastogne to La Roche en Ardennes. Does anyone know where to look for this routing?

From Libramont to Bastogne the “train” is actually a bus which stops at what’s obviously an old train station (but no tracks) in Bastogne. I don’t think the rail lines were rebuilt after WWII. I found a piece of the bus schedule in my scrapbook … Ligne de bus 163b Libramont to Bastogne. That kind of looks like Bastogne is the end of the 163b line.

Found this on the Belgian tourism website: http://www.belgiumth…. Poking around on that site looks like you can find something that will work, although the things I tried didn’t come up with an option by public transit. Train to Marloie (3hours, connection at Brussels Midi) and bus from there might work if you can search out that bus schedule on the infotec.be site.

Bastogne is a great visit if you’re interested in WWII. Great museum at the memorial (which is pretty awesome for Americans in itself). Movie, displays, etc. all in English, French and Flemish. We were there on a Sunday and the town was pretty dead — odd because the guidebooks act like it’s the busiest town in Europe for having things open on Sunday. Did not see any taxis or buses other than the one we took, although there were numerous bus stop signs around, so there must be additional bus service. I think there are taxis, too (it’s a fair walk to the Memorial) but none were in view on Sunday.

The staff at Brussels Centrale was very helpful in explaining how to get to Bastogne — we had not done ANY advance research on the trip. A staffer actually volunteered information as we were rummaging the printed schedules. We just had a picture of the memorial in Bastogne with us, but absolutely no idea of how to get there. I did need to make use of my high school French to buy lunch in Libramont and on the bus.

Thanks. I hadn’t realized that there are two bus companies, apparently not at all coordinated.

What I found was By train from Brussels :
Take the Brussels-Arlon/Luxembourg train, alight at Marloie
and take a no. 15 bus to La Roche.

From La Roche to Bastogne
13 Bus to Melreux
train [L]5558 to JEMELLE.
train [IC]2108 toward LUXEMBOURG. It arrives in Gare de LIBRAMONT
163b Bus to Bastogne.

Then to Brussels seems simple enough.

There used to be two stations (Sud and Nord) in Bastogne with the Memorial roughly equidistant from each. I think it’s easier from Sud, which seems to be the “major” one, is closest to the actual town and is staffed. We arrived first at Sud coming from Libramont (I realize this doesn’t make sense without seeing it on Google maps). Nord is not staffed and I could not find it on Google maps.
