Bus travel in Central and Eastern Europe
Fri, 02/12/2010 - 00:02
Does anyone know about bus travel in central/eastern europe? I will be traveling between budapest, vienna, krakow, prague, salzburg, and munich. I have explored trains but they seem to be inconvenient for the route I would ideally like to take. I have heard that the buses in the region are good, but I don’t have any solid info. Can anyone confirm about bus travel between these cities, recommend a good website, bus line, anything?
I am leaving from Knoxville, TN with $3500 for 46 days
London, Naples, Rome, Cinque Terre, Venice, Budapest, Kraków, Prague, Vienna, Munich, Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris, London

There will be bus service, but I doubt it will be any more convenient than the train. Try www.eurolines.com
Why is it you think train is inconvenient for these cities? All have good rail service.
Tell me your exact route, the order of cities you want to visit, and I tell you the routes and times. There are bus lines between Prague and Vienna, Prague and Budapest, Budapest and Vienna, Budapest and Krakow.
When I look at your itinerary, I would choose the following order of cities in Central Europe:
Venice – (overnight train) – Budapest
Budapest – (bus or train) – Krakow
Krakow – (overnight or daytime train) – Prague
Prague – (bus) – Vienna
Vienna – (train) – Salzburg
If you have any questions about Prague or Czech and Slovak republics, ask me.
If you only want to search train or bus connection within Czech&Slovakia and/or to neighboring countries, use www.cp.sk or www.idos.cz search engines. For domestic transport, they also show prices.
Thanks for the info. Maybe I havn’t been able to find accurate train information for travel between these cites. Papyr, that is actually close to the route I ended up deciding upon. Can you recommend websites to view the train/bus schedules for these trips?
London, Naples, Rome, Cinque Terre, Venice, Budapest, Kraków, Prague, Vienna, Munich, Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris, London
most train schedules can be viewed at www.bahn.de
Don’s right about the German national rail website. It’s the most complete and easiest for schedules anywhere in Europe. Here’s the direct link to the English page: http://reiseauskunft…
The train timetables are in my signature or at www.bahn.de.
The bus from Budapest to Krakow is operated by www.orangeways.com – there are 4 departures a week:

For Prague to Vienna, visit www.studentagency.eu – click International Bus tickets and follow the reservation process. You can even buy the ticket online. The ticket costs EUR 16 or CZK 390. The timetable is here:
